I am considering picking up Mass Effect for the PC - some great reviews and scores , looks like my type of game.........

    .............but no demo :(

So ,my computer specs are :

    Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 2.33GHz
    ATI HD2600 XT
    2 Gig Ram

which meets the "recommended" (as opposed to minimum) spec.

Anyone with experience of Mass Effect on PC care to comment on it's technical performance and what I can expect ?

I dont know how well it will work but I had to update my dvd drive firmware just to get it to install properly. There is a way to get around the install problem if there is no update for your dvd drive(assuming it even needs one) but it basically makes you install the game on your own.

Other than that I cant often play for more than 30 minutes without it crashing on me.
That and sometimes I try to run the game but get a security error. I have to try and launch the game 3 or 4 times before it finally runs without giving me a security error on startup.
and i'm not the only one if you check the forums.
Some people run it with no problem. I'm just not one of them.

I dont know how well it will work with a 2600xt. what resolution do you want to run it at? I max the game out at 1280x1024 with a 4850 and a q6600.
If its that res or lower then it should run ok with the detail turned down.

it looks, works fantasticly on my 8800GTX..... although mouse aiming feels a bit strange, not like smoothness of HL2.

im pretty sure you need to turn down the graphics setting for that 2600xt

Thanks for the replies - I don't think turning down the graphics res a bit would bother me overly. More concerning is Chris's tale of crashes and errors. :?

Chris - with a game driving your system as hard as ME does - could that be a power supply stability issue maybe ?

    Pish yes it is.

It's worth it for the story alone.

    corsair 620.
No other games crash on me. played forged alliance for 2.5 hours last night. like I said, not everyone has issues with the game. seams like i'm the only one on here who has the problems that I have.

I've played the 360 version 3x start to finish and I love this game. It's been awhile since a good RPG came out. FYI: Your character from ME will transfer over to ME2. All specs transfer from lvl to alliances.

Make sure you get all the patches and are up to par with sys specs.

I'm sure it would be 150% better on console than on the PC. I find the mouse movement awful, the HUD over complicated and inconsistent and the story way to slow to get going. I played it for around 6-7 hours and gave it a good chance but just didn't enjoy it! It's a shame really because I normally enjoy this style of game.

I enjoyed the bit that I was able to play. I stopped playing it though because its too fustrating having to save every few minutes because you know a crash is around the corner. I think that some downloadable content came out reciently. maybe i should try that, there may be bug fixes in it as well.
