Hey guys, just a quick question about international shipping and tax.

I've got a budget of about £150, and was scouting about for a decent set of headphones and a new sound card when I stumbled upon this:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-Razer-Bar...hash=item130255212640&_trksid=p3286.m63.l1177

Seems pretty good to me, £130 all in for what would cost ~£220 to buy from the UK.

i've bought little things like leads and guitar picks from the US before now, but I was just wondering if there is anything I should be aware of ordering a 'biggish' item, will I get stung for loads of import tax (i.e. will it end up costing me more than getting it from the UK?)

    Thanks in advance

Get the seller to label as a gift or something.

Ah good plan, forgot about that. I'll ask and see what happens, if the item is marked as a gift does that make it tax exempt altogether or can they still charge ?

IIRC Gifts are duty/VAT free but if they suspect it isn't a gift then it will be subject to the full duty+VAT.

If you buy it with money you got on your bithday, isn't it technically a birthday present?

OT: Yeah - You would only get shafted import/VAT if they suspect it isn't a gift. Side note: Law enforcement suppliers will not mark things as gifts >.>

So it makes SFA difference on items worth over £36.
No, confiscation and a smuggling charge.

How do all these myths arise? The truth is out there.

    Hit and miss for me.
Have been charged sometimes but mostly not.

Gift seems to be a uniform solution.
