I have an acer aspire x3200 which has Nvidia 9200 onboard graphics. As this was not good enough for me to play some of the more serious games coming out nowadays I decided to upgrade, and after buying a larger case and psu decided to buy a new graphic card (xfx Nvidia 9800 gtx+). I installed it into the pcix slot and checked the bios which says it is the primary display, but for some reason I cannot get it to bypass the onboard graphics. I have tried disabling the onboard graphics in the control panel but still it won't use the new graphics card. Is there anything else I need to do, or is it simply a case of a new motherboard? I am using vista with service pack 2, have an athlon x2 dual core processor, with 2 gb ram. please excuse me if i'm missing something really obvious but i'm quite new to computers.
I hope I'm not stating the obvious but your monitor is connected to your new graphics card port, not the onboard graphic's port?
Yes, my monitor is plugged into my new graphics card, but on my screen it simply says no signal. I am also using a dvi to vga convertor
plug the monitor into the onboard card, and double and tripple check that the BIOS is set up correctly (i.e. that a PCIE card has priority, and, if possible, the onboard card is disabled.). Failing that, try another DVI-VGA converter. other things you could try would include a different PCIE graphics card. If that were to also fail, chances are your motherboard is shot.
Make sure the primary graphics adapter is set to PEG in the BIOS. make sure the adition 6 or 8 pins power connector(s) are connected to the card.
as far as i can see all the power connectors are set up( it takes 2x6 pin connectors), i have set it up in the bios, and disabled the onboard graphics via control panel, it is in the pcix slot properly, and still no joy. is there any chance i need more power. im on 500 watts at the minute. im really frustrated with it, just says no signal, have tried another dvi to vga convertor, have tried both outputs on the card. just dont know what else i need to do
what brand of psu? If its a Corsair or OCZ or similar, 500W is fine If a Q-tec or Mecury or similar, 500W may not be. Have you another graphics card? or another pc to test it in?
am not sure of my psu brand, but its not a very good one. i have tried my card in another pc and it works great, so the card is fine. its definitely a problem with my machine. i will borrow a bigger power supply and see if that makes a difference. thanx very much for all advice by the way, i really appreciate it
try getting a mobo without onboard graphics..............also don't listen to your neighbor...he knows nothing!
