    I work in shorts, t-shirt, and flip-flops :p

I've also come to work in my PJs a few times.. best part of being a programmer, there's no dress code most of the time.

I must admit that I had to go and look up Barbie's careers on Wikipedia to confirm this suspicion, but it really is rather unfair to make the oft-claimed claim that Barbie overwhelmingly assumes traditionally female roles. She's been an officer in several branches of the US military, a NASCAR driver, a firefighter, and so forth.

Of course she's also clearly anorexic, which doesn't really help.

I'm sure I saw this in a porno some time ago. It went something on the lines of:-

"I'm here to run an important diagnostic on your hard drive ken" said Barbie

    "Gimmesome sugar baby!" said Ken

and then the dodgy music started and no work took place at all.

Then their system suffered a serious hard drive failure which resulted in a huge order from an important customer was lost costing Ken's company millions of dollars.

You see Mattel what happens when you put hot chicks in IT jobs!

representative - right, so add about 40 pounds to make it look vaguely human representative , then another 40 to make it representative of a programmer. Also, that computer looks like a bad case of blue screen of death.

I love that she may develop products such as "a technology to conserve home energy or programming a newborn monitoring device" - So it's still home-making and babies in Barbie land then!

OMG guys, you need to get out more and meet real people (especially woman) if you think a 6inch plastic thing is "hot".

Thinking about it, maybe that's why the missus goes to bed early! Damn Barbie to hell :-0

I'm very conflicted about this. On the one hand, Barbie is up there with Disney when it comes to negative media and mass culture influence on young children; Barbie is an icon of traditional conservative femininity and was instrumental in constructing and perpetuating notions of stereotypical gender roles for decades. Now that we have a Barbie that's showing girls technology and science can be cool, am I supposed to feel like we've made progress? Or has the field merely been co-opted for the sake of market trends? Will this cause a feminisation of the IT industry, resulting in an even greater wage gap than we already have (women get paid significantly less for the same types and amounts of work than men in science- and tech-related jobs)? I don't want to place too much on this one particular doll, obviously, but this type of move by Mattel makes me feel both somewhat proud, and upset at the motivations and ultimate negative consequences it might have.

I think many people need to lighten up. It was relevant, it was amusing, and I'm sure most of us have wasted more time of life watching YouTube / being Rick-Rolled.

It's not like they're suddenly going to do a weekly feature article on the best barbie accessory (though this would be fun to remember for April Fools in a few months)
