    Hi all,

I've done a little researching on the Internet and have decided to break the bank and buy a XFX 5970 Black Edition for my rig (details below). Something that has confused me is the connections out of the graphics card. I'll be connecting my machine up to a Samsung P2450H 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor for gaming, and also my 50" samsung plasma TV for viewing films and maybe some gaming.

The 5970 has 2 Dual-Link DVI-I & 1 Mini DisplayPort. Can I convert both DVI-I connections to HDMI to plug into both the LCD monitor and the plasma? Is this the best option?

Oh and finally, will sound transmit to my plasma TV over HDMI, I read somewhere that highend graphics cards have this feature?

Thx in advance, and sorry for being so stoopid!

    PCI Express query

Ok, now I'm really confused, the XFX Radeon 5970 I've found on overclockers.co.uk says it has bus type: PCI Express 2.1, but my m/b has

    Expansion Slots:
    » PCI Express 2.0 x16: 3
    » PCI Express x1: 1
    » PCI Slots: 2

Do I need to find a PCI Express 2.0 version of the 5970?

    Thx in advance

I think the best option is DVi- HDMi connectors. ATI cards can transmit Audio+video through HDMI.

Don't think sound works through a adapter though. The PCI-E slot will be fine, it'll work by default.

Yeah Bloody Pete is right. Sound won't pass through the DVI-I connectors even with HDMI adaptors on them.

DVI its only Digital Display (image), you wont get sound through thisp port

Just to cut in here with some more accurate info.

The XFX 5970 BE comes with a DVI -> HDMI adapter that actually supports audio.
Just attach the adapter, connect your HDMI lead and enjoy. You'll end up with a new playback device: "ATI HDMI output" in Win 7. In contrast, my DVI -> HDMI cable from Amazon didn't do the job.

So... use the DVI -> HDMI for the TV, and the other DVI for your monitor (you can connect it via DVI, right?)
Oh and as a side note there is also a mini-DP -> DP cable included.

Well, Gotta say I didnt knew this, never felt he need to do something like this (the HD 5870 comes with the HDMI port) and yes you are very right here!.

I was doin some research and BTW its not any DVI-HDMI adapter, you need the one that come especificaly with the card, he adapter pin-out must match the one from the card to get the audio out on the DVI

Thnx PhoenixTank, we learn new stuff every day, i though this was just plain impossible. :)

I honestly thought it just couldn't work after I read up on the DVI & HDMI spec.
Very glad I checked the XFX box - using my TV to play music as I'm typing this.
    Happy to help foxpoo!
