Looking for a car for christmas but can't think what to get as I want something small and most of all cheap on insurance for example a 1.2L Clio cost sorry is 3.6k on insurance. My absoulute maximum budget is £1000 for the car and £1500 for the insurance!

Also diesel seems to be cheaper on insurance and would be cheaper to run.

    Thanks

    EDIT

    - Okay managed to get it down to £1000 on a provisional for a 20year old mini.

    - £2000 on full UK license with one of my parents as an additional driver.

Hopefully I see mini in my future!

If small and cheap is the only criteria i guess a Ford ka or Nissan micra may be up your alley.

Although if you are young the biggest cost would be insurance, so that's probably what you should look at first.

sorry £3600 for insurance on a 1.2 clio, suggest you actually call the insurance companies and get a direct quote.

Vauxhall corsa 1L 12v, cheap and pretty economical.

Yeah, comparisons sites suck for young people. Contact the insurers direct.

I live in a 'good' area, store my 1.2 Corsa (02 plate) on a driveway off-road, but not in a garage, and am fully comp (3ft was more expensive), and my dad is the second driver (took ~£600 off my insurance)... 17 years old when I got the car, insurance £2063 a year.

They're going to molest you badly, your budget is £2.5k so you're going to have to go lower on the car budget imo.

Some sort of corsa is good and economical; if you get an automatic car it drops the insurance a bit too. Do you have a local car dealer / garage you can go and have a look at each car, see how you'd feel driving it first?

Im in Wisconsin and I get 20% off for having over a 3.0 average GPA. That and probably because I told the insurance agent I only drive to church every Sunday and very rarely take my grandmother to the shops.

Whats sucks though is that my Insurance is twice that of what it would have been if I was a women.

Oh wow. Over here everyone gets exact same price. Your discount only depends on how many points you have. 0 points = full price. negative points = price increase. postive points = discount. biggest discount you can get is 25%. i will get that next year i think. if not then in 2 or 3 years. im not sure. there is no gender or age discrimination here.

It's probably beneficial to talk to your local insurance company directly. I looked into the bigger insurance companies we have here in the states, they were about $60 more a month then who I'm currently with. What a rip off.

I pay about $1600/year for my '07 Impala SS w/5.3L v8. In four years my rates will go down. (when I turn 25) Or if I get married in that time, lol.

Got to love the logic behind insurance rates. Being a young male, automatically counts against me. But if I get married, or if I was a female, I'm obviously a more careful and better driver. :p

    Get something pre '73 :jawdrop:

Classic insurance, free RFL, and you get to learn spannering whilst keeping it on the road

Classic insurance can be used on cars fifteen years old or more I believe.
But then most companies don't offer classic insurance to under 21s or under 25s.
But yes, free road tax is a good bonus as is learning how to spanner.

I found it hard picking my first car. I got into classics and ended up buying myself a mini. I now have two, one as a daily and the other as a rebuild.
For me it had to be something a bit different, none of this plastic euro-box crap on my driveway please but if you're not too fussed, then all the usual suspects, Corsas, Clios, different variants of Peugeot hatch backs; you know 'em all.
All of those should be around a grand to insure and will drop quite a bit in the second year if you get a years NCB.

My first year insurance was 1100quid; my renewal is due in a couple of weeks and I've found a quote for £650. Much better (still extortionate for a 998cc mini).

any small car under 1.6 is going to be around the same price to insure at your age

dont use comparison websites as they dont work when your young, try an insurance broker
