Hi, I have an overclocked GTX 470 AMP! Edition folding away for the team. The Zalman cooler is fantastic, quiet and is at 56C folding at the moment. I've read the new issue of the mag and the new 5** series are getting great reviews. How do the new coolers, on the the 5**series, perform sound-wise idle/folding? ... & to that of the GTX 470 AMP! Edition? Thanks
HI, they are better then the 4xx reference coolers for sure, but still not as good as your Zalman. They have just copied what ATI did with the 5870 Toxic's
Thanks for your reply. That's good to know I can't hear the Zotac AMP! over my system with fans set to lowest. It's literally silent if not for the HD's. This is a mega bonus for me. I've also got it overclocked for folding, at the moment: 850 / 1700 / 1775 @ 1087mV (58C) How would this compare to a 570/580 @stock noise & performance? Also are you likely to hear the 5** series cooler over a quiet system with fans set to lowest speed?
I have ran GTX580 flat out and they can get very noisy, not in the 480 hairdryer league but your Zalman is the best hands down. for performance just google gtx 580 ppd :=)
you will hear gtx580 over quiet system fans, stock cooler is good, but not very quiet when you put it under heavy load. but it's no noiser than 8800GTX, gtx260 or 5870 i've had, and can't be heard over speakers. best to stick with your custom cooled card if you care about quiet and folds 24/7.
The Zotac will definately be quieter, although to be fair it is bigger - iirc it is a three-slot job! The temps seem much lower - 55 at peak for the 580 vs a mere 35 for the Zotac. It also seems quite fragile, but as long as your not throwing it around (who would throw around a 300 quid card anyway?) it shouldn't be a problem.
Thanks for the replies. I'll stick with my Zotac - getting just over 16000ppd (from 12000stock) with comfortable temps. Can the Zalman cooler for the 4** series fit the new 570/580's???
I don't think so, i know all the 480 water blocks don't fit the 580. I remember seeing some overlay pictures of the two boards that some guy had done, but for the life of me i can't find them. Search "fitting GTX480 water block on 580" and see what you find. Although this was just full cover water blocks, i think they hit a row of 4 or 5 capacitors just to the R/H of the GPU, but again it's been a couple of weeks since i looked at this.
Thanks for the reply Rob. This cooler keeps impressing me every day, I'm now at 846/1692/2015...only thing holding me back is the max voltage of 1087mV. Folding at 60C & 16638ppd approx. If the 5** series get a similar one I know what I'm buying next
no non-reference gtx580 at the moment, but this one looks very interesting: more power circuitry, huge ass cooler and ATI 5870-styled output ports. http://en.expreview.com/2010/12/17/the-worlds-first-non-reference-geforce-gtx-580-exposed/13091.html
