Hey guys, new PC arriving tommorow so wondering on the must have software (Free or paid, I don't mind spending on something thats worthwhile) so far I've got the obvious lined up; Anti-Virus Firefox (My preference ) Windows Obviously VLC Alchohol 120% WinRar Could I get your guys suggestions please? Thanks.
The first things that get installed on my PC are the following: Obviously AV and Anti-Malware software - Kaspersky Internet Security, SUPERAntiSpyware, SpywareBlaster etc. for me. CCleaner (nice little tool to delete temp files etc.) Firefox Foobar2000 (audio player) VLC (video player) BurnAware Free (fantastic free software for burning CD's and DVD's) uTorrent (can't live without that) ConvertXToDVD (IMO the best automated DVD converter) Adobe Photoshop CS5 HWMonitor (monitors temps etc of most system components) CPU-Z WinRAR WinZIP Daemon Tools (similar to Alcohol 120% but free) Of the lot I would thoroughly recommend CCleaner, BurnAware Free and Daemon Tools!
Good call on the Daemon tools thanks for that, Ive used it before so yeah it's definately just as good as alcohol. I use spotify free for my audio personally as its just magnificient. Thanks for the recommendations they all look useful
Hi there, here is what I would suggest: Stardock Fences - Link - It lets you create Fences where you can put different shortcuts which is amazing when you have lots like I do. SUMO - Link - It searches your current software for updates, which makes it easy to know what out of date or not. I also recommend CCleaner. - Link And Defraggler - Link - This defrags your HDD much better than the standard Windows one. I'll update if I find any more that you might think are useful.
I haven't tried Spotify myself. Was looking for a good replacement for WinAmp after it became a bit too bloated for my liking. Am liking Foobar at the moment though. Good shout on Defraggler too! Although keep having to remind myself not to run it on my SSD!
Try 7zip, much lower footprint and generally much better than the paid alternatives (WinRar, WinZip) http://www.7-zip.org/ Oh and as it's open source, it's of course available for other platforms too (It's the best zipping tool on OSX too IMO)
Nice suggestions appreciate them! And for anyone who hasn't tried spotify I'd definately recommend it, free music with low bandiwdth reqiurements, good quality etc.
If you like music, then Audacity from SourceForge is a must-have. It's also good at stripping out fluff from podcasts
Firefox Mediamonkey Fraps Microsfot Security Essentials Teracopy Z-Zip K-code lite Utorrent Steam open Office
If you want to make it easy on yourself head over to http://ninite.com/ and build a package. Much much easier! Oh and for the love of internet... don't install Kaspersky Internet Security. Worst. Program. Ever. -J
Opera (never liked Safari much, don't like firefox and chrome crashes too much) iTunes (gets a bad rep but i like it) Skype (all my gamer friends have this, mainly used as an IM unless we're playing together) TheUnarchiver (Think 7zip for mac, not so essential since it only adds additonal archive compatability rather than giving you some) KomodoEdit (Great notepad++ alike) uTorrent () iWork (better than office imo, especially on mac!!) rEFIt (Allows the EFI to recognise and boot ext2/3 partitions)
