Development Your Favourite Text Editor?

    Talking purely text editors my favourite is and probably always will be UltraEdit.

    For IDEs I love Visual Studio's, especially since VS2005. Although it gets better with Visual Assist on top.

    i've seen a text editor with zoomed out view of the whole document on the right of scroll bar, and like a RTS strategy game map, it puts a square on the part of the document you are looking at.

    anyone know which text editor is that?

    Ha - yeah notepad (original) rocks RichCreedy. The only thing I like Scintilla/Scite for is that it draws a dashed lines between my curly braces and other opening/closing tags. The color coding is mostly useless (at least after a while, I remember when I started out I was happy to have it but now I don't really look at them as much).

    I didn't realize that NotePad++ and ScIte were both products of Scintilla. I googled Scite vs Notepad++ and retract my "try it" comment because it seems notepad++ is a bit more feature-rich. I guess the benefit of Scite is that it has a standalone executable so you can take it with you on your flash drive and I've even been able to run it on protected systems.

    Tend to do alot of work on unix based servers so its pico or nano for me.
    On my mac I tend to use text wrangler and windows servers all have portable versions of Notepad ++ on them which is quite good.

    Vim, it's just so amazing. After cutting my teeth on vi the extra features just blew my mind, like being able to undo more than one change! My supervisor at the time said that feature would make me careless. He was right!

    Once you've taken the time to learn vi/vim you'll find that you struggle without it and you'll try to exit editing and move the cursor around with hjkl and then hit \ everytime you want to search. Sometimes that pays off like with firefox and twitter it opens the search for you.

    Vi makes the inner geek feel good.

    Java and Android: Eclipse (Brilliant IDE)
    C++: Visual Studio
    Embedded work(C and ARM Assembly): IAR Embedded Workbench
    C and everything else: Scite, as i love the light-weight but configurable.
    Linux: gedit(no need for anything more)

    You can change the colour scheme in Notepad++ to anything you want - Settings... Style Configurator. There are several preset themes to choose from but you can customise it to anything you want.
