I believe WOW has been doing everything you just described for 7 years now.

 

We shall see. To me the only games that can pull it off are mmo's, Activision / Call of Duty has turned a lot of its fans into enemies. With each release less people buy it and more complain. Would I buy a game as a service? No. Not while I can buy the type of games I like as products. Will I ever? I honestly don't think so, not while my steam account has loads of unfinished games. I guess it may be time to start taking more advantage of the steam sales. Just in case all games become services, at least that way I'll have a back log of games as products. I wonder if I'm the only one hoping it falls on its face, oh and prepared to keep my money on my pocket.

 

I wish that was true, but MW2 and Blops sold very well, better then the vastly superior CoD2 and 4 I think, and this is the problem. For every old fan they turn into an enemy, they seem to find 10 more young teenagers with daddy's credit card to replace them.

This is why when something great comes out that supports what I believe in, I have promised to vote with my wallet. Witcher 2 I brought full price although it was not normally a game I would have needed to rush to get (but worth saying, I'm so glad I did!), as I will BF3 if it ticks most of the right boxes. The last 2 Call of Duty games, I have not brought or even played, I might if they go under £10 in a Steam sale and that's it.

 

The new vegas idea sounds good, if they implemented that it'd be epic! Imagine if they had giant tournaments (online) in Mr Houses casino once in a while, poker would probably benefit the most. And everyone gets something for participating (a cool hat or something), it'd keep people coming back to see whats new and make them more likely to buy the DLC! Not that it will ever happen... Such a poorly made game Lets hope the new engines decent

Bringing this comment back to the article, Blizzard get away with this and are allowed to make ridiculous sums of money because they keep their side of the bargain - constantly innovating, expanding, patching and improving.

CoD as a service CAN wok, IF they keep their side of the bargain. New maps, game mods, weapons, perks - constantly patching the game to improve it and stay on top of hackers. This will be worth subscribing to.

If they are going to try to charge people just for a few tools like clan management they will deservedly fail.

Basically people are not stupid. They will pay for something worth having and they will not pay for something that is crap.

 

Most people are stupid! How many people paid full price + £10 for what amounts to an expansion pack. Activision made loads of money off people, but continue to make money from stupid people.

 

That just means that Activision looked at its market and priced the expansion pack sensibly. For a lot of gamers, £10 is probably the upper limit of throw-away money, i.e. something that can be blown very easily, without a lot of thought.

For me, it's half a nice meal out or approximately 2 cinema tickets. I'm sure I'll get more enjoyment out of a PC game that costs £10 than 3 hours in a cinema or a couple of plates of sushi.

 

I meant the game costs £10 more than others at retail and its not a new game just a short single player with tweaked weapons. these types of games/expansions used to cost £10-15. the DLC is £10 but is an option i only took once and will not be doing again.

 

Most people are stupid? No. Some people merely have different values to yourself.

Lets say you play CoD all the time, you are in a clan or your real life friends play and you chat with them and have a good laugh while you play. An expansion pack adds a handful of really good maps that extend your fun and enjoyment by perhaps hundreds of hours.

Hundred of hours of fun for £10? As Sp4nky said, £10.00 is not a lot of money these days.

I am not a fan of CoD I am just playing devils advocate. I personally would not pay £10.00 for a map pack, but if someone else does it does not mean that they are stupid.

 

Does the state of the gaming industry at the moment indicate that it is likey to make this a good thing or bad thing for gamers?

Yep, and Activision will continue to milk the teets so long as their are millions of kids and other gamers with more money than sense who are willing to pay $60 for a game every year plus $15 map packs (and now a subscription).

 

Most people are stupid (or at least ignorant) for forking out for content you used to get for nothing.

Loyalty has to be earnt bit like friendship and sometimes not easily given(The Steam platform has served me well. I was using steam when it was part of VALVE , so for me tried and tested)

We have alot of corner shops which you pay through the nose for the convenience. Just because they are the source of their games doesn`t necessitarily mean cheaper,

Whilst on the subject might as well go for the whole DREAM and ask for better games, or a return to the old days when games contained bonus materials and took weeks to complete.

I believe that EA has got green envious eyes for steams Loyal fans and i believe that steam is dedicated to gamers and online gaming. I have bought many a game from them at discounted prices. The 2K pack 30 odd games for £54(not on sale now).
