A quick question on temps. i have a phenom 955 @ 3.8ghz.The case is a raven rv02 and the chip is cooled by a h50 with two gentle typhoons @ 1800rpm. I am getting around 40 degress at idle and 55 at load. Are these high? Do I need to apply new tim?
My personal maximum for Phenoms is 60 C. Over that and it gets uncomfy, even if the specification for maximum operating temperature is 68 C (core) or 62 C (CPU). 40 C on idle sounds surprisingly high, but that's just your fan controller profile? As long at it's stable, why should you even care?
I know its within safe limits, its mainly curiosity really. I have the fans 100% all the time which makes me think there could be something going on.
Sounds more like your just hitting the limit of the H50 really, my mates i7 920 gets simular temps @ 4GHz.
What's your Vcore? Really the only strange thing is the idle temperature if the fans really are running at full speed.. Or then you have some power saving feature disabled?
It's 200+19 and the vcore is 1.6. A bit high but it is set to auto. The fans are not pwm so are are always running maxed.
1.6v dont like the sound of that, manually set it a lot lower and see if stable, then raise it 0.05 until stable. 1.45 1.50 should get you 3.8. My 955 runs at 3.6 200*18 at 1.35v but apparently i got a 'good one'
I've usually hit the stable maximum at about 1,5 V with quads (be it 3,8-4,1 depending on the model (I've had everything between 955 and 980)) so 1,6 V is really high. With that Vcore 40/55 C is not surprising. Also PWM is NOT the only way to control fan speed, motherboard have had fan controlling wayyyyyyyyy before the 4-pin connector and PWM came along. PWM just makes the controlling more efficient and enables even lower fan speeds.
I don't mind the fans running at 100%, the noise is bearable. I tried 1.55 v on my last board and it wasn't stable but I will it on my new one. Thanks for all your help!
The voltage is high, but when the multiplyer goes above 17.5, it turns off AMD cool 'n' quiet, which turns the multiplier down and under volts as well. That might explain the idle temps. You could try changing the htt to get your overclock. Like for me it still clocks down because it's at 16.

There should be absolutely no need for that much voltage at those settings, 1.6 is way over the top. Hell my 955BE hits 3.8GHz on stock volt with zero effort, just crank the multi. In a 690 II A with a Hyper 212+ I idle around 30C and max load at 54C. As mentionned, 60C is about the general safe max for those chips.
