hi, its my first post here so im sorry if i miss out anything.
I am looking for some help on buying a new laptop with a budget of around £1500.

Im a 3d animator using 3ds max/maya/after effects and not gaming. Im moving into a small flat and turning freelance next month so im afraid a desktop is not an option at this time for me. weight and size is not a problem.

Im not worried about having a nvidia quadro gpu. (although nvidia is preffered for the gpu as there are probelms with ati and maya) lots of ram and a decent processor is a must. also a 17 inch screen would be a bonus.

I thought i found a nice setup on kobalt, but it looks like there are no more after visiting there site this morning

Another option i found is the 17.3" Vortex II 17 on pc specialist

    i7-2760 (2.4 ghz)
    16gb samsung 1333mhz ram
    1.5gb nvidia GTX 560 m
750gb wd scorpio black hdd 7200rpm
artic cooling mx3 high thermal conductive compound
    17.3 matte 1920-1080 screen

is it worth paying the extra for the next level i7 2860qm 2.5mhz? or is the performance increase not worth the price hike.

does anyone know about the cooling and build quility from pc specialists? as the cpu will be running at 100% for hours when rendering. (I will be getting a laptop cooler for it http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cooler-Master-Notepal-U2-Notebook/dp/B002NU5V4A/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1318417545&sr=8-10

or if anyone knows of any other brands that would be better?
Im based in the uk btw.

    cheers for the help

oh that could be an option, do MSI make well built laptops? sorry im new to this laptop market.

cheers for the heads up though.

also is it worth getting a ssd? i heard that they are more likely to fail over time when under strain, and i guess running 3d programs fro hours on end will put it under pressure

    Alienware M17x?

This week's deals are listed here.

Their cheapest deal with an NVidia card is listed at £1299, you can customize the build, I think you can spec up the monitor to 1920x1080 for another £70.00, never buy RAM from Dell, if you require 16gb just get it after.

They have posted a discount code for a further 15% off the total system price - 0TKH4PZ8673N1Q

In addition if you sign up with topcashback (my referal :naughty:) you can get cashback a few months down the line (topcashback effectively pay referal commission they might have received directly to you), make a note of the 'e-value code' then make sure you clear your cookies, login to topcashback and follow the dell link from there you can find your chosen system by searching the e-value code. I have got money back from Dell over the last year however it is not always guaranteed but is worth a go.

*edit* Checked the deals, the £1,399.00 deal looks like perhaps the best base to start from, it has the 1920x1080 screen, maybe consider a processor upgrade, do the hard drive and ram upgrade yourself if necessary.

    ASUS G74Sx?

    Similar spec, better looking ;)

Plenty of major retailers stock various models: Play, Amazon, Scan etc

    Erm....

None of the mainstreams come anywhere near the Clevos for power, build quality and future proofing IMHO. Kobalt sold Clevos..

PC Specialist have a great reputation and also sell Clevos, you don't get loads of bloatware junk on Clevos either.

I have the Clevo P150HM (which is the VortexII at PCS I think) and it is just amazing. It is very low key in looks, is very very fast and cool, and built like a tank. Reviews say it is the first laptop to truly match a desktop in capability. I use it for many things but video editing is the most important. You can also upgrade them considerably more than other laptops along the line.

Have a look in the Sagar/Clevo forum at NBR if you want to see user opinions pix and comments.

Clevo do not sell to the public only through resellers such as PCS or in things hidden inside mainstream laptops. They make fab computers!!

And whatever you get take Blogins advice and use a credit card for full protection!!

thanks blogins for the credit card tip, abit of extra security is always good.

I think after reading all the suggestions that pc specialist is the way to go then, cheers laincognita. The style of it would suit meeting etc alot better aswell.

is it worth getting the 80gb intel 320 series ssd? or is the price to performance ratio not really worth it?
