Electronic Arts, the nation's largest maker of video games, says it is caught in the crossfire between the German and United States governments over the Iraq war. This month, the German government listed a new game produced by Electronic Arts on an index of games the government considers violent. Such games may not be advertised or displayed on shelves in Germany, although they may be kept under store counters and sold to adults. The game, Command & Conquer Generals, depicts an animated siege of Baghdad, with the United States military battling a fictional terrorist group called the Global Liberation Army, which bombs the city with missiles carrying anthrax, killing civilians. The director of the German federal bureau that reviews media products for the youth market said the game had been restricted because it glorified war. http://news.com.com/1200-1043-993849.html
*thumbs down* Pathetic. German government should get REAL. They claim it wasn't a slap in the face because of the war. YA RIGHT. Whatever. I don't work for EA -jason
I, for one, am glad that some country is taking some initiative matters such as this. At least they aren't banning the game, people can still legally buy and play it.
I personally think the game is tasteless but at least they are still giving ppl the choice to buy it even though its behind the counter.
I think it's a bit silly, but as has already been said, at least they're still selling it. It's only a game...
Is C&C: generals really that bad?? I haven't had a chance to play it myself, but from what I've seen, it was no worse than starcraft, or civ 2 for that matter... Two words: Oh Noes!
I heard last night that some radio stations are banning a couple songs (bombs over baghdad, bandages... and a few others) just in case they remind people of the war. Ugh, just turn on the TV anytime during the day, look there's the news, look it's about the war. Get a life. Geez. Some people will complain about anything. Get desensitised... PLEASE!
About time someone got off their ass and banned that US propogana! The game serves no purpose but to degrade opinions of iraqi peoples. I am in full support of its banning (or 'sheltering'), if only the Irish government were interested in something more than public transport ( ) they might do such a (good) thing.
oh my dear lord whats the world coming to ummmmmm just because this game happened to be released when war was declared its all banned so let me see...... ummmmmmmmmm Medal of honour? no one complained about that and the fact it was a game about ww2, where millions of troops died. ummmm what about every ww2 and modern day flight sims and combat sims? in that we all play them and no one complains. Jeeeezzzz talk about worrying over something that doesnt concern you, yes you all have your opinions but if you dont like it dont play it! i dont see anyone coming out and banning games that make ww2 special! maybe thats becuase due the fact ww2 isnt going on anymore and you can write and makes game on that because everyone involved in it is more or less dead now.
Have you played it? if not, play it, look at the news, play it, look at the news... notice the similarities?
Your right, the ENTIRE war on Saddam's regime is gravitated around Baghdad. Not that the iraqi peoples lack of funds, nor the regimes fondness with terrorism, or its links with al-Queda has *anything* to do with it. They simply did not have to have the Iraqi people as a 'race' in the game. They could have chosen any country/culture, but no, they chose the one closest to terrorism, Al-Queda, and 911.
