to be brief, my machine is:

    HP ENVY 17 Notebook 2101ea
    Windows 7 64-bit S.Pack 1
    Intel Core i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHz (8 CPUs)
    6144MB RAM

    6850M 1GB
    Driver Version: 8.911.1.0 - CAT 11.11a
    Driver Date: 18/11/2011

I am running at LOW settings and 720p resolution and getting frame rates averging mid 20fps.
I know my machine is not nop notch, but from what I have seen in various forums and Youtube - I should be bettering this.

I have images of processes, current settings and a text file with DxDiag but am not sure how to post them here.
    Sorry.

Any help would be really appreciated.

    tks

A couple of things you could look at:

    1) Ensure the laptop is in "high performance" mode using Control panel > Power options

    2) Ensure BF3 is actually using the HD6850m. I can't remember if that laptop will use the AMD equivilant to Nvidia Optimus (automatic GPU switching) or if it is manual.

The HD6850m should be roughly equivilant to the older HD5850m and thus has HD5750-HD5770 levels of performance. Enough for medium/high settings @ 720p at the very least.

Upload pictures to hosts like imgshack, tinypic or similar.

Yes - power options, first thing to look at. Laptop power profiles can make such a difference can't they.

EDIT: Just thought, is the laptop plugged in when playing?

I know this seems like a stupid question but a lot of the problems people have with laptops performing poorly is down to them throttling back when on the battery (the battery can't provide enough juice to power everything at full load).

the latest AMD drivers made my BF3 drop some fps. and i reverted to an older driver. so you could try that.

also what are the temps on the laptop ?
