Just got 2 letters in the post from tax man, I was not looking forward to opening them.... Tax rebate for £326.14!!!!!!!! That means I can sweeten the missus after blowing most of my Christmas bonus on a new computer and now can buy her and engagement ring. I love when a plan works out!
yes please a gold will do!! edit: jealousy is a bad thing, you still have a few more posts to go to reach this milestone
Tbh, I had no idea it was coming. It is from 07/08 so the year I got made redundant. Tis a lovely little Christmas surprise
wow that took them a while?!! Maybe i might get a surprise in a couple of years time as i got made redundant this year
yeah, my wife had 1 of those saying she was going to get nearly £2500 back for the last 6 years or somet, and we cant see a penny of it thanks to this stupid bankruptcy
Yay! Money that was rightfully yours in the first place! I got nearly a grand back about 8 years ago, which was nice until I realised how much interest that would have earned (not a problem these days however).
Depending on how you fill your paperwork out, you can manage not actually paying the tax man any income tax all year long, and come end of financial year, maybe one of you owe the other just a teeny weeny lil bit. Avoiding sales taxes can be a little more difficult, but it's still just paperwork.
HMRC are idiots. I phoned up a couple of times asking about my refund for 09/10, got told it's done automatically now so I should wait. Waited, nothing happened so I phoned back and they said they were waiting for me to supply them with info so they could process my claim. Morons!
It was likely the tax that you paid up to April (end of year) and was probably made redundant before April, meaning that you had overpaid. When this happens to me, i always claim any tax back that ive overpaid straight away. Normally if you dont ask your unlikely to recieve the tax rebate, but its nice to know that eventually they spotted it (assuming that was what it is). I do think that people should be educated in basic money affairs at school, so after leaving they no things like this and other basic stuff rather than other things that get taught. I did hear though that this has been suggested and may actually happen finally.
I'm waiting for about £400 after being on emergency rate since June. I've only earned £2000 since then, so it's a fair whack. But I'm thinking of it as enforced savings; I'd get bugger all interest on it and I'd have spent it all by now anyway.
I got one a while back too, nearly died from the shock. Got 2 letters in the post, opened first to find a letter saying "this is HMRC, we've found we owe you money, we will send you your refund later". Ok, so it was only £18, but i figured it would be months until I saw that. Opened second letter, and oh, it was the cheque from HMRC lol.
