Hey all, small question regarding regarding a possible upgrade, my current system has a 775 socket, i know most of you will just say i should buy a new board but for other reasons i dont plan on doing that change for maybe 9-12 months-ish so please humor me.

I am currently using a E6600 which ive pushed to 3.2 Ghz (prbly get a bit more actually) and was thinking now that the quad core is fairly cheap (125 quid-ish) about upgrading to that, so im asking how much of a difference would it make to my gaming fps in general?
Im using a gtx580 3gb on my 30 inch (2560x1600) my cpu cooler is a arctic cooler xtreme rev2, also would going from 4gb ram to 8 have any impact on my gaming performance? many thnks for indulging my out of date question:D

£125 for a Q6600? :eeek: You can get a preowned one on ebay for half that.

As for a CPU vs RAM upgrade I'm not so sure... it really depends what games you're playing. I honestly cannot believe I'm seeing somebody "upgrading" to a Q6600 in 2012 :D

Your system still Sounds very capable so a new board isn't a necessity but the q6600 is a great upgrade, maybe not loads of fps but a decent improvement in general snappiness! Same with the transition for 4gb to 8gb

LOL. Dread to think where you're buying stuff from if you intend to pay £125 for a 6600!!!!!

    Shocking!

I sold mine 3 years ago for £112 and it overclocked to 3.8ghz. Wouldn't pay any more than £50 for one now and you'd get better performance from even an i3 2100.

:thumb: As said don't pay over the odds for a 775 quad as a 3ghz i3 would generally give better performance and halve the cost of a RAM upgrade too (DDR2 vs DDR3). Since you really need a K series CPU to o/c a cheap mobo isn't a big handicap.

What other reasons? You've got a GTX 580 on a Core 2 Duo system powering a 2560x1600 screen. Why the hell not would you upgrade to Ivy Bridge? Any upgrade you do to the CPU is going to be like bailing a boat out with a bucket.

yes i know a i3 or something like that would be better value for money, but as i said im strictly asking for something compatible with a 775 socket you suggest ebay for a second hand q6600? hmm not so sure about that really. ty

also asking if its even worth me spending the money, the above guys comment seemed to be saying, "why even bother", so still thinking about it. ty

found on ebay a G0 stepping Q6600, if i remember correctly those could be very highly overclocked

Considered an E8500? They still run with the best of them, for a decent price as well.

Don't think an E8500 would be a worthwhile upgrade over an E6600 really.

The Q6600 isn't even worth it at that price, you'd be better off getting like an i3 2100 and a compatible mobo. Would cost just slightly more than £125, maybe £150ish for the CPU and a nice motherboard. Is your RAM DDR2 or DDR3? Would be easier to upgrade if it's DDR3 of course.

The best of them? Sure, maybe if the best of them had been shot in both legs and had both their eyes scooped out with a spoon. I'm not saying it's a bad processor, it was great in its day, but it's way past its prime now.
