1) 16gb of RAM is useless as no more than 8 will ever be used, unless you do rendering. 2) Windows cant utilise any RAM speed above 1600mhz, so the suggestion of 2133mhz RAM is a waste of money. If you're building a new pc now - why would you go for old gen and not new gen, for the sake of a tenner? Granted there is only a 2-3% difference between them, but it does run cooler up to 4.5ghz, which you're mad to be running over that for a 24/7 OC anyway. I'd like to recommend the MSI GD55 and GD65, as they are some of the best performing boards, at a very reasonable price. Also, if you're from the UK, you can get the GD55 for around £150 and you get 8gb of GeiL RAM for free, which is an incredibly good value.
Not sure what the problem with a PC running hot is, as long as it's working properly. Someone's going to point out that I own a GTX 480
Not a hater of IB...may have been better if they hadn't used gloy glue for thermal paste Sent from Bittech Android app
It's generally advised to pair Ivy with Z77. Compatibility is there, but optimizations are made for the most recent CPUs. Drop in an 8GB kit and save the cash for a 128-256GB SSD imo. Prices have tumbled. You might also want to wait 3 weeks and make do with your current graphics card until them.. Ahem. Unless you're an AMD fan, in which case take advantage of the recent price drops now. You can live with your Corsair PSU - 520W is enough for a single GPU - but it'll only be a basic 80Plus iirc so could use updating later for something newer that's quieter/cooler/power saving. Keep the case, buy a 30 quid cooler (or, for now, don't OC and use the stock) and use whatever cash you have left to upgrade your monitor. I suspect that's as old as the rest of your PC.
Thanks for all the advice. Choosing can be so complicated. Will decide soon and show you guys the list.
wait what not going to tell him how great the ASUS TOP edition GPUs are? ;P Gene-Z is Z77 right? isn't there a new model for Ivy bridge? or have i mixed up my numbers again.......
Maximus boards are good if you use the features...some don't like the slot location and how far it sits to big cpu coolers. RAm - Corsair, g.skill, geil, kingston, patriot, used to recommend OCZ. Crucial.
Why recommend a 560ti 448 when a 570 is always better in every test and the same price if not less? (just looked on scan there is one 560t1 448 for £155 but the rest are £190+). You get the extra performance and the extra RAM (the 560-448 are basically 570's (GF110 architecture) that have 1 of the 15 SM disabled. Also 560ti 448 are limited editions so that might be worth considering if you think SLI is something that might interest you in the future.
Im still confused why people recommend 560Ti 448's when 7850 overclock to 7870's easily, and better the performance of a 560Ti by far, whilst using a lot less power.... (1x 6pin for a 7850 vs 1x6pin + 1x8pin) Its a no brainer.
Hi, Just been reading about the build for August and this sounds interesting. I wonder will this fit into my current case and will my PSU be good enough? What does such an expensive motherboard offer over a cheaper one like the Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H? Remember to get 1.5V memory, for example Corsair Vengeance. No need for a new PSU unless you're bothered about efficiency. The HX520 does around 80% while the 80 Plus Gold rated Antec HCP does 85-90%. It will take quite a while to pay itself back in the electric bill. 750W is overkill by the way. No need for a separate sound card unless you're unhappy with integrated.
