I have a HIS 5750 1GB graphics card with a viewsonic VA1901wm display. The optimum resolution of the monitor is 1366*768 and that resolution is supported by the graphics card also.

In screen resolution in win 7, if i uncheck "hide modes that this monitor cannot display", i am able to use 1366*768. If not, the maximum is 1360*768. But my monitor says it supports 1366*768

So how can i fix this and use 1366*768 resolution?

It's an extra 6 pixels. Some monitors have very strange issues with resolution settings as it doesn't scale well. Did you try setting it to 1366x768 anyways?

Apparently it's a resolution mainly used for Tv's, this explains it better.

For a monitor you are best going for the custom resolution so that you get a 1:1 pixel ratio so you get a sharper image.

To do this first of all i have to uncheck "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display" from advanced settings in screen resolution. Then by clicking "list all modes" i can select 1366*768.
But when switching between 1360*768 and 1366*768 i have to adjust the horizontal and vertical positions so that the screen fits properly. If not a part of the screen is not visible.

    FTFY :p

Likely because one is designed for your screen, the other is not.I'd definitely use 1366x768 due to the reasons mentioned above.

    I meant 6 horizontal ones. :D

    It's obviously more given that it's 6x768. :)

If using the generic pnp inf for the display it would be unaware and Windows is playing it safe with standard resolutions, and / or the monitor is not reporting that resolution via it's edid so it is not available. Also if 1360x768 looks clear and is centered on the screen properly I would just use that instead of readjusting for the overscan as having to do scaling via the gpu is not a better option.
