Hi folks, Not been round here in a while and have lost touch with the new formats SSI EEB & EATX etc. Hopefully someone would be able to verify the following hardware (all which should be on the VMWare HCL). 1x S7056GM3NR Motherboard - Tyan S2011 SSI EEB 2x CM8062101038801 CPU - Intel Xeon E5-2630, S2011, Sandy Bridge, Six Core, 2.3GHz, 15MB Cache, 95W, OEM 1x TJ07 Case - Silverstone TJ07 Black 2x CFP52B Case - Silverstone HDD Cage 2x FP58 Case - Silverstone DVD Bezel 8x CP05 Case - Silverstone HDD Backplane (I have some SATA drives already) 2x SDP08 Case - Silverstone 2.5 to 3.5 Adapter 1x SOD02 DVD - Silverstone Slot DVD 2x NH-U9B SE2 Heatsink - Noctua NH-U9B SE2 CPU Cooler (Socket Intel 2011) 2x CT3K8G3ERSLD81339 Memory - Crucial 24GB kit (8GBx3), 240-pin DIMM, DDR3 PC3-10600 memory module 2x ERV1250EGT PSU - Enermax Revolution 85+ 2x SSD - Samsung 256GB 840 Pro (When avail) 3x ST2000DM001 HDD - 2TB Seagate ST2000DM001 Barracuda 7200.14 SATA 3 6GB/s 7200rpm 64MB Cache 8ms OEM NCQ 1x MRSAS9240-8I/SGL Raid - LSI MEGARAID 8PT SAS/SATA 6Gb/s PCIE RAID 3x GT-120-1850 FAN - 120mm Scythe Gentle Typhoon 1850 RPM Cooling Fan 2x LSI00258 Raid - LSI00258 - LSI CBL-SFF8087-SATASB-10M 1m Mini-SAS (SFF-8087) to SATA fanout with sideband)
Will this be in use for a work system? Any reason for not using hyperv 2012? Space requirements Number of NICs required?
How about this Seasonic X-1050 PSU? There's a 1250W version available too but it's probably overkill. http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1050...0xm-full-modular-80-plus-gold-eps-12v-atx-psu Review: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=309 Maybe get larger and fewer DIMMs, so as not to limit future upgrades? edit: Nevermind, 8GB is probably as big as you can get. 1850rpm fans are somewhat loud, but I guess this doesn't matter?
Cheers guys wasnt sure if I'd get any answers here on server stuff! @deathtaker27 - It will be for a VMWare ESXi training rig, I was planning on running 2x nested ESXi and 1x vCenter/iSCSI to show vMotion etc. NICs/Space wont be a problem since its only training @Bindibadgi - That memory (DDR3 PC3-10600 • CL=9 • Dual Ranked • x8 based • Registered • ECC • DDR3-1333 • 1.35V) is ECC and IIRC its 3 dimms per CPU. I checked the Mobo Manual and for RDIMM x8 DR EEC 1060/1333 it can be upto 8GB per DIMM. 1.35v - I'd just searched the systemboard model number and that was one of the kits returned, do you think that was a mistake? @mm vr - Its only a test rig and as ESXi (free) has a limit of 32GB it would be overkill at the moment. I have an old tbalancer that I was thinking of running with the 1850rpm fans or have they changed the connections on the fans (iirc it was 3 pin)? Do you rate the Seasonic better than the Enermax (TBC I've not come across Seasonic before)? Thanks again folks!
Yes, the Seasonic X series is the best PSU series money can get you. Check out the review. edit: Actually, the Seasonic Platinum series is even better. http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=264
http://www.tyan.com/product_SKU_spec.aspx?ProductType=MB&pid=753&SKU=600000269 X58 was 3 DIMM X79 is 4 DIMM You CAN run 3 just fine (or 2, or 1, or 8), but you're missing a memory channel
Oops I'd skipped to the last page and saw they were both 9.7 Also nice that its cheaper than the Enermax too!! Ahh good call, I hadn't picked up on that change
I guess the options are - http://www.tyan.com/manuals/S7056_UG_v1.0a.pdf Page 42 4x 8Gb (2x 4GB) Kits Dual Rank x8 1333 Single Rank x4 1333 (Supported but not validated) Dual Rank x4 1333 Quad Ranked (Supported with limited validation) Which would you go for as the costs are the same?
