I recently bought an AMD A10 6800K and a low profile cooler (Coolermaster GeminII M4) for a mini-itx case. Since the APU graphics are heavily reliant on memory speed, I was thinking of selling my Corsair 8gb 1600MHz RAM and getting some faster stuff. The trouble is that all the memory I can find above 1600MHz seems to have stupidly large heatsinks on them. Are there any that either don't rise above the RAM or at most a cm or so? The cooler goes above both RAM slots, so there aren't any options about where to put it. Also, is it worth looking at memory above 2133MHz? It seems to get rarer and a lot more expensive then.
The Samsung Green stuff should be suitable for you. Its rated at 1600MHz but 2GHz+ overclocks are not uncommon.
That looks interesting. It'd certainly be no problem spacewise! I haven't tried overclocking my current memory as I'd heard Corsair's low profile stuff is pretty much useless at it.
I haven't done any RAM overclocking either but I presume its motherboard dependent so its worth checking out before buying the Samsung stuff in case your limited to 1600MHz
The board (ASRock FM2A85X) supports 2400+, it's certainly worth a try! I've ordered the memory, so fingers crossed.
Good choice, I got the samsung green recently and have been enjoying it at 2ghz cas9, memory overclocking at that level has also been a new thing for me. Don't be afraid to have a play around with some of the lesser known timings, the standard latency on the memory of 11-11-11-28 1N is loose and it also has some very loose secondary ones that people don't usually look at. I wouldn't normally bother either but having been able to reduce some by about 1/3 and seeing some fair improvements in benchmarks at least (nothing real world on my system) it could be worth it. As the integrated APU loves fast memory it could make a more noticeable difference for you, worth a try anyway.
I'm quite looking forward to trying it out now. I paid for next day delivery so hopefully tomorrow I can report back on what they'll do. I'll be really happy if I can get them to 2400MHz.
I've got mixed results with them. I can't get them to POST at 2133MHz (there's no 2000MHz option) no matter what timings or voltage I use. At 1833MHz they seem completely stable with tight timings. I can run at 9 9 9 18 1T at 1.35V, with all of the minor timings at the best settings it'll allow. Given how it runs at that, I'm surprised I can't get it to work at 2133MHz - even with 1.55V and CAS 12 timings. My stable set up so far with this APU is: CPU - 4.5GHz @ 1.40v GPU - 1013MHz @ stock GPU memory bandwidth - 29.9 GB/s
I have a 5800k running with samsung greens at 2133mhz without any issues and it is 4fps better in games than my 1600mhz vengeance ram which I took out of my main PC for comparison!
It may be worth giving them a try in your i5 rig Teppic and see if its the RAM that wont go over 1866MHz or the motherboard.
I had the same idea. I was able to run the i5 PC at 2133MHz and CAS 10. It ran a memtest fine. I wasn't able to get it to 2400MHz. Hopefully a BIOS update to the AMD board will get it running faster. But still, I've gone from 1600MHz CAS 9 2T to 1833 MHz CAS 9 1T, which isn't too bad. (And I've never seen such little RAM, it's cute)
