What are the main 'causes of a computer suddenly resetting it self?

My computer has run stable ever since I got it... but all of a sudden it has suddenly rebooted three times in a row, in the past 15 mins. No blue screen of death, just rebooted as if I hit the reset button. I was thinking the psu, but what would make it do that all of a sudden?

    what's the OS?

maybe a virus that messed up the registry. maybe your windows is due for a clean up...

or psu... but I would go on the software side..

windows XP automatically installs itself with the setting to reboot instead of bluescreen. You can change it somewhere. my computer > properties i think but i cant remember and i'm at my girlfirends win98 machine ATM.

    Ok,

take off the heatsink, clean off all the dust that has accumulated. Put it back on.

And all your crashes will disappear.

If everything has been running stable this long, your PSU is not likely to have suddenly become worse.

i had a similiar problem a few weeks ago, kept getting random lockups. I had installed a 2nd vid card during the cold months, and the thing ran very hot, since the manufacturer was a dumbass and didnt put a hsf on it. Anyhow, as the air temp rose 2 F in my house for the summer i started getting random lockups. I eventually figured out it wasd the 2nd vid card and superglued a hsf onto it. So i suggest u clean out ure cpu one, and check all other ICs and if they are hot put a heatsink on em
