Rather than Alpha Centauri, my personal favourite space colonisation game is Outpost (by Sierra). The satisfying combination of building, digging, and a complete lack of guidance (inside the game and out) made it an exploration game in the truest sense :p

It was even possible to get an instance game over by failing to find any habitable planets at the start!

Sounds like a winner... Just started playing Civ5 a bit this past week. Hard to believe that I never head of Alpha Centauri as much as I've enjoyed some of Civ games over the years. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for this one.

I also enjoyed playing Outpost way back. It probably wouldn't hold up too well these days, but I do remember playing it quite a bit at the time.

This is awesome news! Now, as long as it's not an awful 'Online only' thing like SimCity.. I dont see how this can go wrong! I got bored of the standard Civ games after 3, as they were mostly the same (as based on true history). But if this is how it seems, it can go so many different ways during a playthrough.. Oooh..
