I have one of the original icemats, its frosted on the frontside but is still smooth. I think its some sort of tempered glass like they use for shelving. Its pretty tough stuff anyway, ive dropped mine a few times, still perfect condition. One thing tho, doesnt seem to work with logitech mice, well the old ones anyway, not too sure about the MX series. :D

Yes, the surface has a very fine frosting which gives it a slight texture. This is nowhere near as rough as the other surfaces out on the market.

Got one here and it's lovely - been using it for the past few weeks and I'm very happy with it. Ultra-smooth, even with a mechanical mouse.

I just tried my really old version 1 microsoft intellimouse that used to jump about on the CoolerMaster mouse mat (brushed aluminium) and it works fine. If I can get my hands on a logitech mouse I will try it out.

I have a Logitech MX-700 which replaced a Logitech cordless optical.

    Used them both on:
    • - a "normal" mouse pad (that I prefer only because of it's gel wrist support),
      - a 3M optical mouse pad,
      - and a "white piece of paper".
    Both had similar experiences.

White piece of paper is best... although I hate using it this way. Am still trying to find a better solution for the MX-700.

On anything but the paper, the mouse gets erratic. The pointer moves opposite where I move the mouse. Up-Down axis seems to be worse. This will happen after a while of using it... seems to work "normally" at first. I immediately go back to the white paper and it's fine again. Go back to either of the other "real" pads and it will work fine until it doesn't again (few minutes usually, sometimes less).

Called Logitech Tech-support (last week) and they confirmed that my experiences were normal. Logitech optical mice work best on "light, nonreflective surfaces." They also told me that batteries lasted a lot longer on lighter surfaces as well.

Am frustrated and keep reading posts hoping to find a decent mouse pad that works as good as white paper with the MX-700 (and other logitech opticals, I guess).

A few months playing CS everyday soon wears out the ratpadz surface.

Bit of a thread revival here but I just got an email from www.euro-tech.co.uk to say that the Black Icemat 2nd Edition is available. The second edition is exactly the same, just 44% larger.

I think it still has problems with the early logitech optical mice as the compatability list only lists the MX series mice.

    The price is £29.95
