Graphics Best card choice for Q6600 and 4GB DDR2 RAM?

My PC has been crashing due to graphics card issues for a while now, probably due to my 8800GTXs old age. However, I am not intending on completely upgrading my PC any time soon, so I'd like to get something that would be a marked improvement, but not completely breaking the bank.

I am conscious of getting something that may end up being bottlenecked by my CPU and RAM, so what do you guys think the best solution is? I'm looking to pay up to around £100, give or take.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

If you could up your budget a tad, a 750Ti should work well for you.

Score a second hand GTX 670 on the cheap if you can. That would be all the GPU you'd ever need!

 

I have a similar socket 775 setup (see my sig, it's basically a Q9550) and I recently upgraded my graphics card to a used GTX 580. For £80 or less you can't go wrong, especially if you go for one with a 3rd party cooler. It's "only" 1.5GB but has more grunt than a 750Ti and will do until my next, full system, upgrade.

(Edit: check your PSU is up to it first though - the 580 is quite thirsty.)

 

A GTX 560 Ti go for 50-60 2nd hand, would be a superb match.

 

One going on market place for £45. A massive bargain. Huge jump over 8800 !

If you could SLi two 560's (providing your board supports it and it doesn't go too much over budget) you could potentially have a winner. What I will say is that even so, once you upgrade your CPU you'll see a massive jump in fps as the newer CPUs won't bottleneck you as much. My suggestion would be that if you want to spend the money, perhaps considering saving up over the next month or two and get something a bit bigger, the 670 being a great example (around £150 - £180ish second hand, sometimes more or less). That will be a beast of a card in comparison.

 

I ended up purchasing the 560Ti from the marketplace. I won't be able to upgrade my PC for at least a year or so, and when I eventually do, I will still be able to use this card in my Spare PC, so it's probably the most logical thing to do at the moment. Thank you for the suggestion though!
