Ive played it on off for years.

Basically you get a starter ship once you do the tutorial from there you can follow the missions and will get level 10 thats when you get a bigger ship choice

between Science ships, Escorts ships and cruisers ships. Most of the Star trek TV show ships are in the cruisers section. Voyager and the Defiant are in there respective places in science and escort.

You can play any class wtih any ship. A tactical captain in a cruiser works well as you gain more dmg options for example. Engineer in a escort gives it slightly more survivability.

Dont even remember my ingame nick enough could find it out easy enough.

I play STO on and off and will be happy to answer any Qs you have...

    But the TL-DR - 3 Factions, 3 Disciplines, 3 [ish] Ship Types

the 3 Factions are as you'd expect - Federation, KDF [Klingon] and Romulan Republic [though as a Romulan player you have to 'ally' with one of the other 2], IIRC you get enough character slots to have one of each faction.

3 Disciplines - again typical trek combo of Tactical [Damage], Engineering [Tanking and Buffs] and Science [Special Abilities and Debuffs]. Your Captain will be one of these 3 and will have abilities related to their discipline, they will also have Bridge officers belonging to these disciplines which dictate what abilities your ship and away team have

3 [ish] Ship Types - The ships are largely divided into categories matching the Disciplines:

Escorts [Tactical] - Designed for maneuverability and damage, relatively fragile typically sporting powerful front facing weapons. DS9's 'Defiant' would be an escort.

Cruisers [Engineering] - Typically slow and cumbersome but sturdy and still capable of bringing the hurt. Typically sporting Beam arrays and 'broadsiding' [side-on where the fore/aft fire arcs overlap] the enemy. The Enterprise is a cruiser.

Science Ships [Science] - Geared towards using science officer abilities. Has the storngest shields but lacking in the weapons front. Often overlooked but can be potent if used right. Voyager would be a Science ship.

the 'ish' is Carriers, they're still a relatively new ship type and they don;t appear until late game.

You get a new ship every 10 lvls, your choice doesn't really matter until lvl 40 when you choose your end-game ship [or one of them].

This is a good reference for all things STO and these guys are a friendly, helpful fleet [guild] and the skill planner on their website is a good place to give you an idea of what ship/skill combos work/are popular...

Is this really worth a play? A good friend of mine left eve online to play this a while ago and from time to time I would get updates from him about the game etc, but was never really interested. But now that it's free I may have to have a look to see what its all about.

personally ive been having fun playing it thus far
my current ship is the USS Iron Maiden 96669-B Akira Class

just started to get hold of dilithium to get consoles to boost performance on the ship

however the game does have its faults namely...Ground combat. It just feels like a chore and most of that is down to poor controls / poor camera controls
everything else is spot on though

Played this quite alot previously but not played it for a long time now, will have to get back in to this and see what has changed.

I stopped playing after getting some Borg parts for my ship.

Decided to give this another go last week, and found that I had forgot my login details so had to start again which I was not happy about.

Then I went to login to a website related to this game and it logged in with my old details, so opened ARC up and tried them in that, and hey presto had my old account back.

I just wish there was some higher ranks because being level 50 gets abit boring.

If you ain't played since Borg there's enough new episodes to keep you going for about 60hrs without even doing elite missions Ect.

Dunno if this is classed as necro'ing. Sorry if so.

Yeah, I've been playing since it went f2p.

The ground combat is pretty bobbins. I'd suggest if you want to do story arc missions having an alt set up so it's not min/maxed just for one type of combat.

There's also a new expansion coming in the next week or so, and it should make the non-STF queue'd content pop a little more often than previously because of how the gear get's upgraded from MK XII to MK XIV. New level cap and ship tiers coming in too, although depending on who you speak to it's either doom for the game or awesome.

Get yourself in a busy fleet, too. Makes all the difference in doing the pve stuff rather than pugging it, especially as all the pve queues are going to get a fair bit more difficult when the expansion comes out.

If you do still play and need any help or advice, just give us a message in game: @shandypandy.

I started this game a few weeks ago based on the suggestions in this thread. Overall, definitely worth a play. It is pretty solid considering it is f2p.

    Thread Necro!!!!

me and my friend Aeon, have decided to set up a fleet, and we have AHEM ''borrowed'' the use of the Bit-tech teamspeak :)

basically its just me and him...but people are always welcome to join

Some changes in the past 12 months
Lvl cap is now 60, along with a whole new teir of ships, upgrade tokens are avalible ( for a fee ) to upgrade your T5 ships to T6.
Redesign of the game map, not to massive unless you were well acquainted with the old one.
Equipment upgrade system, allows you to increase the mark of your gear once you have enough upgrade items from the RND dept

so if anyone is looking for a Fed / Rom fleet, they are welcome to join, just pop along of an Evening and see if me / Aeon are on the Bit-Tech Teamspeak and come give us a shout, we usually inhibit a room where nobody else is as there is no designated Trekkie Room
