Hi all, I am currently running the following spec built some years ago MB: MSI P67A-GD53 (B3 Rev MoBo CPU: Intel I5 2500K GPU: GeForce GTX560TI Twin Frozr II 2GB RAM: Crucial 2 x 2GB PSU: Silverstone 500w PSU I think I'm ok in keeping motherboard, cpu and generic case. Budget: £500 Main uses of intended build: Gaming & Plex server Parts required: GPU, HDD, RAM Previous build information (list details of parts): As above Monitor resolution: Full HD Storage requirements: SSD for games and 3TB HDD for the plex server Will you be overclocking:/no Any motherboard requirements (no. of USB, Xfire/SLI, fan headers): keep existing Extra information about desired system: 64bit windows 7 or 8 required I would like to upgrade my existing gaming pc which is beginning to show its age, so think a new GPU would be top of my list. I would also like to invest in two new storage devices as follows: 256GB SSD for games ( I have an extensive steam library, damn you steam sales!) 3TB HDD for storing media for my plex server. My questions is which hardware I should go for and where to install a new 64 bit operating system, Hard drive or SSD as the machine is left on constantly? I currently have a 1TB hard drive where everything is stored including 32 bit os. Is the above possible or should I look at seperating the gaming machine and plex server, I would obviously appreciate any power consummption advice too Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions.
Hi get yoursef a 970gtx i have the msi ones at least 8gb ram and the drives you mentioned I would get 2 3tb drives 1 for games and 1 for your plex stuff The cpu is still fine for games My machines are left on 24 7 so you are fine The 970gtx is nearly twice as powerful and uses less power than the 560ti
I'm no expert so hopefully someone can either confirm or shoot my suggestions down in flames. But personally i would go for another couple of stick of Crucial 2GB, a GTX 970 unless you are willing to wait a couple of months for the rumored GTX 960 that should be cheaper. I would also install the OS on the SSD as it make things feel a lot snappier, even if you don't re-boot often all programs will benefit from faster read & writes, and although I'm not familiar with plex servers i can't see any problems with streaming media from the same system you game on.
Plex dont really take much strain on the system as I use it only when you add loads of new stuff it thrashes the drive a bit but its fine But its easier to have seperate drives though for the games and plex media
Drives Thanks for the replies guys, Any recommendations for SSD? Was looking at a WD Red for the plex media is this necessary?
I have 2 2tb reds and 2 1tb reds and are serving my plex system there great drives but not really needed The samsung 850 evos are good ssd drives scan have this http://www.scan.co.uk/products/256g...25-ssd-read-530mb-s-write-470mb-s-90-74k-iops
