Just ordered me one of these chips (AMD XP2500+ 333FSB Barton ) Just wonder now though if it will be compatible with the set up that I have atm.

Asus A7V333 running the 1017 revision BIOS
    768mb Crucial PC2700 DDR

    Any Ideas?

    TIA

the RAM can handle it but your motherboard will not. If your motherboard can run XP chips then it will run at 133mhz(266FSB) but i dont think you will be able to have it at its rated speed.

I would invest in a tasty new motherboard to go with that CPU, such an an Abit NF7 v2.0

Your nearly right, it appears the the VIA chipset can actually handle 333FSB as the name suggests but this is often not the case with motherboards. In your case the 333 means that it can take PC2700 RAM (333MHz). The info on your motherboard here from the asus website doesn't say it supports 333FSB as i suspected but does support DDR 2700.

Sorry to dissapoint but if i'm right you will only be able to run at 266FSB.

I see.. Don't help when two different websites are reporting different speeds :miffed:

Hope it does support it as don't have the ready funds to get a new Mobo yet.

Should be fine m8... if you can run 166 FSB with a 5:2:1 divider (look in bios) then it'll run fine...
The abit KX7 333-r doesn't officially support 333fsb chips, but many people can run 25/28/3000 bartons without a problem.
Might mean manual FSB/multi settings, and none report of 2500 (ie says 1.830 ghz) but should work ok...

Excuse the ignorance but what / or where is the 5:2:1 divider :naughty:

A divider keeps the PCI and AGP frequencies at or near specification at varying FSB's.
have a look at these posts here they discuss the 5:2:1 divider, which it seems your board does have :)
How do yuo control the multiplier, is this in bios, or via switch on the motherboard, or can't you at all....

Cheers for the info on that.

I can use control multiplier from the bios, but i usually keep things standard (not clocked) chip i have atm is a 1900+

Thing is i had a bit to much to drink last night and have ordered a Asus A7V8X-X :naughty:

lol ok! Was thinking about getting an nforce as well, but the only gains would be a little more mem bandwidth from the dual channel, the abit kt333 clocks like stink :)
195*12.5 is the max of the board (with 2700 ram @ 1.93v oops, hope corsair don't see :naughty: ) lots of errors, but boots to windows, so decided not to bother....

the Asus A7V8X-X is not an Nforce2 board, its a KT400 board, i got one last month for my sister and its a very nice board very the relatively cheap price tag. It can handle 200FSB and more probably, her Tbred XP1700+ can hit 3200+ speeds on it.

If that's the case then why do ASUS state on their website that the A7V333 is compatible with CPUs all the way up to the xp3000?

That link didn't work for me but I've now found the reason.

If you look between the PCI slots where it says A7V333 you'll see the revision of the motherboard. If it's 2.0 then you can use the Barton. Mine's 1.04 so I can only use up to the XP2600 which saves me more than half the cash :thumb: but will be slower :sigh:

Hmmm...trying to fing the XP2600 266 FSB is impossible. Does anyone know where I could get one in the UK?

i dont think you will find a 266FSB anywhere, possibly Ebay but i would just get an XP2400+ and overclock it.

You might be ok.... again going back to the abit story, most of the v1.0 boards which are supposed to support up to 2100 pallys only will run 2500 bartons....
Sure you could buy a 25, then RMA it if it doesn't work (say you didn't know or summit) an get a 2600 instead....
If you can run 166fsb, then you should be able to get most CPU's in the board...
Don't you currently have a 1.4 t/bird...? If so, run it @ 166*8.5, if the computer runs ok, then you are ok to stick a 166fsb chip in....

Yeah, i have a 1.4 TBird, but that's in the 2nd pC, the PC that is having the barton is my main one, which has a XP1900+ Chip in it.

As for the board, i have my new one with me now, just awaiting the CPU :sigh:

Thanks for all posts concerning this matter.
