Still over a ton for 16gb . I tried some RAM that was confirmed compatible with the G7 which was 60 quid for 16gb but no joy in the G8

My RAID card has two mini-SAS ports, each capable of handling four drives each.

What's to stop me dropping in one of these or similar, and running a mahoosive array?

Nothing really other than price and availability of large 2.5mm drives.

In G7, nothing. In G8 your plan will fail due the non-existence of 5.25" bay.

My microserver is nothing more than a NAS and Print server at the moment, with some light media duties, so it isn't being unduly taxed - I don't need a swanky G8, no matter how much I want one. ;)

I might have access to a bunch of lightly used 1TB 2.5" HDDs through a friend, and I'm just toying with ideas while I wait to hear from him.

OK, so I found it impossible to resist the latest Gen8 cashback offer.

I was surprised to find the FDD power plug in the ODD bay though, and even more surprised when I saw how much people were willing to charge for a FDD -> SATA power adapter.

    Anyhwere from £6 to £16!

Anyhoo, I knocked up this little doohickey so I can run an SSD in the ODD bay:

Or you could have just pulled out the molex connector from the bellow the ODD bay and put a molex to SATA power adapter & splitter.

For those looking for the ultra low wattage Xeons, there is a 17 Watt E3-1220L V2 on the bay right now.

    ebay clicky

Too rich for me, I'm afraid.

Ooh, identical drives in an array? You're a braver man than I.

Yep, should be fine. Just making use of what I have going spare. To be fair I have always used identical drives in arrays! Well that's what I was taught to do :D

Then your teacher's daft. Just make sure you have good backups! (Although that's good advice regardless of what drives you're using and how, I guess...)
