I'm already 1/3 way into this...but here's some pics for u. Motherboard of choice Intel D810EMO (Details here) Bought this for SG$38 (Less than US$20)! comes with 3 years warranty. Problem is I had a hard time finding the processor. Finally got one "pre-loved" PIII 667 at SG$70 (below USD$35). Some things to note about the motherboard 1. No P/S 2 for your keyboard/mouse 2. Small (but odd size) 3. Lousy Video (but I don't care) 4. Lousy Sound (but I don't care) 5. Supports only up to 256MB ram (okay I care, but for US$20...) 6. Nice little 44-...erm...tell u later. So I've spent SG$108 (abt US$50) for the board and CPU. 256MB Kingston ram and 12GB IBM hdd from an old computer (loving BP6 now sitting in somebody else's case. Bought the BP6 with my first paycheck after graduation ). Another view, check out the IDE connectors at the bottom of the pic. Can't see heh? Here's the connector 44-pin IDE connector! I'm sure you can plug one of those slim CD-rom directly. Unfortunately No CD rom for this project. The case.... 5-min case cos I took all of 5 mins to decide on the design. No details about the case yet, since I've changed it slightly to reduce the amount of cutting I need. (yeah, I'm a lazy ass) Raw material I made a duct long ago and many people asked me how I bent it. Just blocks of wood, clamps and muscles (not that you need a lot of). Brackets I'm not going for look, but functionality. This will run as a 24/7 server controlled via PCAnywhere (WinXP now, may run mandrake next time or when I can find another hdd) What is this server's job? Take a guess. You will see that I have changed from the Intel HSF (First pic) to a smaller one, and there is a fan running 7V now (see red and black wires). Enough to keep the system cool.
Did this two days ago.. Mounted with brass standoffs and plastic push-in standoff Fan duct...should I?? It's a bit too tall though. hmm.... closeups... Got the fan duct from an old HP server.
Today is... Acrylic Day Or Beauty Glass Day?? Since the HP server duct is too tall, I'll have to do something. Looks good and fits well, but there's a chip when I was making the 80mm hole. Without a 80mm holesaw, I have to make do with a variable holesaw. You can see the chip there. But I don't care. This case is function over style so I'll let it be. Filter to keep the dust out. So just piece everything together...
I must say that's a quality piece of work: simple, elegant, exploiting the characterics of the materials. Brilliant!
The fanguard/filter is not noisy. I have the same design on a 92mm on my HX-08. The initial problem was the filter rubbing against the fan, thus I have a layer of acrylic to sandwich it and keep the filter away from the fan.
hehe, actually you can see the bubbling from overheating the last bend (last pic). I'll give myself a C.
thank you! It means a lot coming from seasoned modders like u. This project is cheap as well! kekeke.... Only spent money on the board and cpu. Materials were from old projects.
Minimalist modding. Or "Modding Unplugged". Or: "Ready, Steady, Mod!" Just your skills and whatever you can find in the electronics cupboard. I see a new trend coming on... But I do like it a lot. It's elegant. Don't see much elegance in modding.
