Whoa.. Been a long time since i posted an update.. Ok.. So here is what i have been doing so far.. I know i said i have finished the mod, but after using it for a few days.. i realised there's more modding to do. 1st.. I re-made the fan controller reason being that even though one can't see the stripboard circuit, it is very very messy.. This time, i decided to get over my lazyness to design a pcb and designed one.. I will post the pcb artwork together with the pics.. Also, the 5.25' bay now houses a fan controller, and audio out, audio in, aux in jack.. The led switch that was there has been moved to the empty 3.25' bay. The empty 3.25" bay houses a led controller(working on a schematic for a sound controlled unit, will add that if circuit works), The NIC card indicator leds, HDD activity, and CD-rom activity(maybe, maybe not) The side window has been remade with now two intake fans(transparent blue, blue lights, and... the 2 fans have a pulsing effect) the two intake fans are targeted at the graphics card and the hdd's.. All the leds have been switched to blue(don't ask me why ) That's about all i can think off.. all minor(ok not that minor) mods, but very time consuming.. I know i have left out a few details, but i will post the pics of the fan controller when i finish it tomorrow, and then more pics will come later... A slight mishap happened.. When i was riveting the new window, i accidentily applied too much pressure and cracked the side panel(not the window).. sad... very sad.. Anyway.. tell me what you think so far..
Actually.. the colour is not that bad.. The colour in the photos is not the real colour.. The colour reproduction is not that good.. The real colour is almost like this .. Anyway.. many ppl have told me the colour is not nice(people who have seen the cpu real life) but i seem to like it..
Here is what i have been doing till now.. Still have to work on the 3.25" bay. Still no lighting(circuit not satisfactory yet) Anyway, here are the pics: Oh.. and i have finally found a name for this pc: Generation X : Media Box
Loks cool, but you should bolt an 80mm fan to that sink - i did it in a friend's machine. Essentially, just drive two screws into diagonally opposing holes on the fan's blowing side, making sure they go halfway in, then just push the fan onto the sink, setting the screws between two fins on the sink. This WILL NOT WORK with four screws. Overall, looks sweet, but you should have left the silver drive in the holder, then bolted the nice windowy one onto the front of it. Also - what electronics store carries those lovely soon to be mofset sinks?
Hhm.. sounds like a nice idea for the fan.. it's just that this is a p2 and it doesn't heat up that very much.. it's always warm to the hand.. anyway, since most of the mods were for eye candy only, i'll just drop by at my local computer store and get a lighted transparent fan.. I got that from my local electronics store.. It was meant for to-220 package heatsinks.
Wow that is a VERY impressive budget mod!! At first I didn't like that inside color at all, maybe the flash/digicam is giving it a wrong loook. You could have make the inside black or chrome (just a thought)....still love what you have done!
Okay.. don't freak out here.. I mainly use mandrake 9.2, but since i wanted to test out other distros, i also have Slackware v9, College Linux v2.3, Red Hat v9, and Lindows(don't ask me how i got it). Now what was i thinking when i forgot to mention Knoppix! That is one respectable distro.
@ bsodmike Thanks. Here is about how much i spent: About RM100-150.. That's about US $25-40. Seriouslly budget. What's the point spending money on a p2 anyway? + it looks good now, at least for me.
look at Gentoo for another linux distro And altho your PC says LINUX powered it might be worth looking at FreeBSD for future referance
Ok. Thanks.. I'll keep that in mind. Actually i was gonna download gentoo and debian later on today.. FreeBSD?? I could give it a try! Thanks for the info!
FreeBSD is a proper unix rather than a linux - but its very well documented and similar to gentoo in many ways (the portage and ports trees for example). Its my prefered choice anyway FreeBSD webbie i have had a little experiance with gentoo, its very powerfull and you can customise it totally to fit your needs to the letter but it can be a bit fidly, the doco for gentoo tends to be quite good as well though. Gentoo webbie hope this helped
Dont want to bitch but its called a case or base unit, not a 'cpu'. You obviously know what the cpu is
FreeBSD v5.1 is ok?? Or should i go for the v4.9?? Anyway, thats 2 disks to my growing list of isos to download. Here it is: Already downloaded: Mandrake 9.1 (3 disks) Mandrake 9.2 (3 disks) Red Hat 9.0 (3 disks) Knoppix 3.3 (1 disk) College Linux 2.3 (1 disk) Slackware 9.0 (1 disk) Lindows 4.0 (1 disk) Still 'pending' Gentoo 1.4 ( 2 disks) Fedora 1.0 (3 disks) Debian (yet to decide which version) FreeBSD (5.1 ok i guess???) (2 disks) Please mention anything not worth getting from my 'pending' list! My connection is not that fast(384k adsl) and the max dl spped i can obtain is about 50kbs. So i'll do about 2 cds a night(i don't dl at day)
i personally use 4.8 but i might try one of the newer releases when/if i build a file server. 4.8 is very stable and a good release but 5 introduces alot of new hardware compatability and features. If you want the lates cutting edge tech support then go for 5 but as its not a powerful system i'd probbably got for 4.8
