Ok well i am upgrading the family computer. Rite now its a 850Mhz P3. I am going to put in a Athlon XP 2600 with the Barton Core.....good for the price??

Than for the mobo i don't kno what to get. I want somthing with 333Mhz FSB, 1AGP slot with up to 4x is fine, able to run DDR up to a gig is fine, with onboard sound, and LAN onboard is fine also...

Now i don't want to spend over 100 for a motherboard...so what are some good ones that would work well for this setup....to run games and such. Not to OC. Thanks for the help

From what I hear the Abit NF7-S is the way forward, for only £75ish too.

the mobo you suggest is great, just an NF7-S without the SATA...

But you def want faster RAM, the 2100 you suggest is only DDR266 yet your chip will be DDR333, so you will need at least PC2700 (DDR333) RAM, or PC3200 (DDR400) as you suggest in your next post, which will give you some headroom for overclocking, which your XP2600 should be able to do v well...

the minimum speed memory you need is PC2700, but if you're looking to overclock, get some PC3200 or better, but make sure it is low latency memory, because Athlons love low latency, they really shine with good timings.

As for a motherboard, have a look at either the Abit NF7-S, which is the best overclocker for socket A at the moment, or the AOpen AK79D-400 MAX, the latter has a dual bios, which means bios corruption is even less likely, along with being very stable, and having good overclocking facilities too.

    hope this helps

I'd probably go with the AOpen then :)

very good very stable board and it's full of great features.

I'd still recommend the NF7-S too though, a great overclocker usually means that they've done something right somewhere, making it very very stable to run well past it's specification. ;)

it depends whether you want to use serial ATA or not, if not, you may as well just go with the NF7 :)

The NF7 is great. Serial ATA replaces those ide ribbon cables you use to connect to your drives. It makes drives run faster (if they support it). At lease I am sure it does. Am i right? Hardly scientific explanation :D.

But the NF7 is a really great motherboard it is cheap feature packed and the support for it is pretty good.

You could of course use "Rounded IDE Cables" :p

Though I will agree they are still thicker than SATA cables...

Serial ATA is the new interface which has recently (over the last year or so) come out to act as the replacement in the budget area of the hard drive market, replacing the old Parallel ATA (EIDE) channels that are found on all motherboards at the present moment.

If you want more information about serial ATA, check out www.serialata.org

    their FAQ are here: http://www.serialata.org/about/index.shtml

Hey bigZ do you need SATA to get your CD drives writing @ 52X because mine will only write at 8X on IDE.

phenomx3 - bit of a random question. Does your CD-Burner support 52x write and are you using 52x compatible media?

Also as far as I know SATA is for hard drives only at the moment. Of course in the future that could all change.

media eh? Hmmm good point there. With my NF7-S it came with the SATA adaptor so I was curious.

    Thanks mate

as -H- says, it's down to your media, if your media won't write at 52x, then it won't. ATAPI CDRW drives support 52x writing as far as I am aware. There are no SATA equivalent drives out at this present moment.
