Well we may not have a mega-test any more, but could we do a group review of the high-street samples? I propose that a few posters go out (myself included), grab as many off-the-shelf mince pies as possible each and find which they think is the best. p.s. The Guardian reviewed a bunch this year, but we can do better, surely?
Yaaas. Mind you I'm stuck with gluten free although GF sweet stuff is ok - the OH picked up a couple of nice looking ones from Waitrose but I can't taste test them yet.
We did this at work, a couple of years back. Six of us split between Waitrose, Tesco, ASDA, Lidl, M&S and Co-op. Many calories were consumed on that day. The M&S all butter mince pies were clear winners, by a country mile. I might propose a rematch.
I think they get hammered in this month's Custom PC megatest! Custom PC - Issue 221, February 2022 | PDF Magazine Download (freemagazines.top)
Are they supposed to be tested with or without brandy butter? And if so, which is the standard brandy butter we're supposed to use? Also, are we supposed to heat them up?microwave or oven?
This year I am destined to be mince pie free, stupid passage of time catching up with me and my reckless youth
Pfft, homemade is really the only way! The wife even made mincemeat last year that has been maturing in the fridge - lots of booze to keep it mould free. Delicious and keeps the kids entertained for 30 mins making them.
Sainsbury's Taste the Difference at the mo. They're pretty good actually. Some of the better supermarket ones I've had. EDIT: Just checked: Also did best the Guardian group test, and are pretty inexpensive.
6 in a box, so enough for a control group without, and a group with Brandy Butter. In each group 1 cold, 1 oven heated, 1 microwave heated. Sainsbury's TTD will be difficult to beat though.
