Following on from the discussion about Custom PC, what mags do you guys read on a regular basis (both tech and non-tech) and what do you think their virtues are? I get : GQ (ace fashion, great articles, lots of info on self-improvement, column by Will Self) The Face (awesome features, great style) Wired (great technology features, but also other highbrow stuff that kicks ass) PCExtreme (cuz I have a free subscription!)
I get pcpro on subscription and that's about it. I buy the daily record most days that I'm not working (if i'm at work I'll read it there in the canteen) That's about it, magazines are rather expensive and I've got books to read on the john Edit: And I sometimes buy Guns and Ammo or Soldier of fortune for a laugh and the pictures of guns I cant legally own in the UK
Custom PC occasionally, good features/benchmarks on newer components, professionally presented, broad range of content. I think they'd benefit from more original modding content though. PC Extreme regularly, I usually have a guide in each month, I think there not stuck up, good modding project features, enjoyable to read on the bog, broad range of content. I'd like to see it on the shelf longer (there's usualy only a window of a few days), and thicker. Adbusters religiously, it's what it says on the front, a journal of the mental environment. Great mix of politics, philosophy, art and activism. I also raed several electronics and scientific mags if theres something that interests me in them.
I was in WHSmith yesterday actually and had a gander thru custompc mag. They had an article on a BiT mod in it too It looked good, but a) mags cost money b) net is free and just as useful for info.
Occasionally I will buy... Air forces monthly Private Eye (actually my dad buys this but I always read it first anyway) Hifi choice TBH I don't find many magazines worth reading , the 3 above I only buy very rarely now and only if theres something that grabs my attention....its the cost that stops me buying them more often, the net is free and often just as good a read....
I'm subscribed to FHM PC Zone GamesTM I'll usually buy T3, Performance Bikes and Focus (science, nature and technology mag)
Max Power/Fastcar/Revs/Redline - occasionally, depending on the features. FHM/Maxim/Loaded/GQ - occasionally Performance VW & The Golf - every month And throw in the odd PC games/hardware magazine, airgun mags, the odd biking and snowboard mags and something like topgear or autocar probably every other month. Oh, and volks world for ideas for me camper. I spend quite a bit on magazines really, probably £20-30 a month. 8-ball
Edge Creative Review Giant Robot Great magazines. Not really the kind of thing you see on the net to be honest.
Every month: Revs/Redline/Max Power/Fast Car/PC Zone/FHM/Custom PC Occasionaly: Maxim/Top Gear/Auto Express I used to subscribe to T3 but stopped it after i got bored
i dont subscribe to any magazines although i feel it is my duty to subscribe to customPC since im in the march issue, and i have been buying it relatively regularly anyway i buy maximumPC whenever im in the states but $9 is getting pretty steep for such a thin magazine other than that i occasionally buy: PC zone, just because it can be quite amusin occasionally evo. so i can look at daft cars i cant afford car, so i can look at normal cars i can afford business week, just so i can keep "in the know" red herring, quite good for stuff on tech companies random photography magazine, because i love photography random hi-fi magazines, because i love hi-fi's vogue (i only read it when the missus buys it, i dont buy it myself, honest )
2600 (hacker quarterly) Wired (i just started reading this recently, not bad) PC Gamer (speaks for itself) Maximum PC (a bit like pc gamer) Thrasher (skateboarding) Nuts and Volts (electronics and robotics) Good Guys Gazette (hot rods and muscle cars) thats about it.
I just purchased my first magazine subscription ever with christmas WHSmith vouchers. I went for TopGear which i buy every so often, love Jeremy Clarkson's articles, so funny.
