my dad works for red hat, so therefor im pretty sure its linn-ix with an i or u sound. Doesn't matter
Linn-ux is how I pronounce it. Back a few years ago I called it Line-x because simply his name is Linus not Leenis.
I asked my dad, and he said linux doesn't coem from linus, even though he made it. Linus was like swedish or something, so they don't have that line (i) sound. also, my dad said that linux comes from light unix.
Not exact quote but its a summary: Linus made his first version called "FreakX" because he said only freaks would use it. [Someone (owner of FTP server he was going to upload it to)] Said that he should change the name to something like his name ([Someone (May have been the owner and I think it was) sugjested Linux.)
The owner of the FTP server didn't suggested it, he just saved it in a folder named linux, linus from his name and the X from FreakX.
I live right around you, Fairfax to be exact. Do you know where exactly your dad works? It would be nice for future job references.
"Lyn-ux" or more properly, GNU/Linux (re. Richard Stallman), which - as I understand it - you pronounce 'Gah-nu Lyn-ux'
Line - nux I pronouce it that way because the creaters name was Linus Trevold. There is probrobly a spelling error there but anyway I pronouce it as closest to his name as possible.
