I have been setting up my new computer to access broadband (ntl) through a network card. I have another computer that was using the connection fine. I set up with details from the ntl site, all settings were checked, double checked. The ip it receives at the moment is incorrect, and it cannot resolve a dns. To make matters worse it has now stopped working when I swapped the line back to my old comp! I am broadbandless, and getting any help from NTL is obviously too much to ask. Anybody else been in a similar situation? It has been suggested that they track how many comps you change it to then disable the line???? Help
Your IP address is leased to the original MAC address of your network card for 4 hours. Turn off your cable modem for four hours and then turn it back on...everything should be fine
if you have win2k go into the command prompt and type: ipconfig/ release this will release that networks card mac adress and all you have to do is wait for your lease on the ntl server to run out, best do it overnight and then it should work....
might take less might take more.... once again if youre in win2k and go into command prompt and type in "ipconfig/all" it will tell you exactly how long you have till youre lease runs out..... might be more might be less.... just how long the ntl server keeps ur ip confing for...
and to make it not happen again, do not swap cable modem between network cards. if you must move which PC the cable modem is on, swap the Net card OR do the 4 hour til it forgets thing
Thanx dudes, I am now back online! The only reason I swapped the line in the first place was to get me new comp connected quick! I will set up ics now
i just did the ipconfig /release thing and wateched my net die oops, hardware reset modem and back with a better IP. (i am naughty and make my IP static - shhhhh)
