Would a IDE cable still work fine if i was to cut the end half off ?? were the blue line is in the pic. I dont need two connecters on it as theres only one drive connected, plus i dont want to have to spend more money to buy a single drive ide cable.
It will be fine, just make sure that none of the wires are shorted and cut it as close to the plug as possible. _C
Using one of my meny flat ide cables i did as suggested by smoguzbenjamin , i cut the end half off that and have it in my machine at the mo.Seems to work fine.
if you cut the end off of a 80 wire cable, dont you have to swap the orientation for cable select to work right?
i tried this on a couple of cables and they didn't work afterward. quite sure i wasn't shorting out, so i've no clue what else was wrong ended up just buying some short single drive ide cables
Found this site... http://www.7volts.com/shorten.htm if you go down to where it says EIDE it says you can do it. The flat ide cable that i done it too is still working fine so i'll chop this round cable soon.I'll reply back to report if it worked or not.
Just thought i would update ya.... i cut the end half off flush with the middle connector and the cable is working fine.
Should work anyway, done it before, before I decided to get another HDD a week later , so I got a rounded one after all. Why are single IDE cables so hard to get hold of? My thread
what about cutting off the longer side. so you have just the middle and the drive conector with the short bit of cable? my dvd drives are about 2 inches from the ide socket on my motherboard and i cant seem to find any cables that short.
That's fine. IDE cables are all straight through, you can use them in any way just fine. Unlike floppy cables which have that twist in them.
