The Inq reports that Socket A, beloved of PC builders world wide, is not long for the world:

AFTER YEARS of loving socket A platform, it's time to say goodbye to all those nice chipsets and motherboards based on it. AMD decided to pull the plug on this one simply as it wants to make a big deal out of the Socket 754.
We reported it was headed for the end of its life last year.

This decision affects K7 AMD Sempron 3000+, 2800+, 2600+ and 2200+ but AMD left a choice to its customer(s) to buy a lot of these CPUs if they want to. It's sure that this will be the last time they will be able to. AMD wants to make this move as smooth as possible. The last order date for those CPUs is May 15th 2005 while AMD will order the last phalanx of Socket A Semprons to march out of the fabs on November 15th.

    More here

Socket A has requested that "no fuss" be made about it's passing, and that everyone should have a good time rather than stand around looking morose. ;)

Probably one of the most sucessful sockets yet imo. Comparatively to socket 7.

Damn they'd better come out with some cheap processors for 754 then - you can get a Sempron 2200+ for £35 currently. Then 3100+ is about £75 afaik.

    Long Live socket A!

Socket A will always hold a place in today's PC enthusiast's hearts for their versatility and long time value. Its sad to see such a fun socket meet its final demise, but it was, unfortunately, inevitable. I suppose its time to move on-to 754 and 939 :D

    R.I.P. Skt A.

Shame, but we all knew it was coming one day or another. But it's not dead yet, we'll still have Skt A systems kicking around for years, as well as being able to buy the parts etc. :)

So why are they pushing socket 754 then? Surely it's simpler just to have a single socket 939 platform and have done with it?

They arent - they are gonna phase 754 out eventually but atm 754 is "budget" sempron processors and there isnt enough difference between low end 939 and 754 to warrent the price difference of moving everything to 939.

Fair enough! I never really took much notice of socket 754 myself, it never had the kind of performance I was looking for :D

There's a pretty substancial performance difference I thought... dual channel at least.

Keep in mind there are many sockets in both sides... you can still get socket 423 stuff for old intel platforms, and s370 as well. And intel has 603 AND 604 for Xeon, 478 and LGA775 for their current stuff. AMD has 754, 939, 940 and of course A/462 which is what is leaving us soon, and when they make their move to DDR2 they'll probably have either 938 or 941 and 755 or 753 (since they'd need new procs for it thanks to the integrated memory controller)

Not if they move the sempron line to 939, that was my point. There is a performance difference because it's currently single vs dual channel which makes the price difference justified.

Remember AMD is only a shadow of a company Intel is, they dont have the FABs and stuff to churn out hundreds of different socket types. Afaik they are having trouble keeping up with A64 demand as it is so killing off socket A now and getting some stock in prep for DDR2 A64 is probably in their best interest. There should be stock of Skt A CPUs for a while yet though.

    Surely it's 1051?

    939 - 368 = 571
    571 + 480 = 1051 :)
