Stage 2. Theory testing. First assebling. Having almost all of the necessary system components ready we decided to accomplish a first test assemble. It's nothing special to tell ... you better look at the fotos. They will be accompanied by brief comments and criticism of practice that didn't go well with theory. It happen because of inaccuracy of measurements or simply miscalculation. But I can say this mistakes weren't fatal and didn't make a big problem for us while assembling the system. They just affected the usage comfort negatively. Just a little. Bottom level. On the bottom end of the tacks there're crew-nuts winded. They hold the plexi circle so that when you pull out the system out of the bin the PSU won't stay inside and it will be taken out with other hardware together. While using screw-nuts we sacrificed 5mm (1/5") of space at the bottom. The next level lays directly on the PSU. The mobo is fixed on this level with legs. It actually fixed on two of them by diagonal. Other two are simply supports. This happen because of miscalculation and only 2 of 4 holes were fine. Other two didn't hit the holes in mobo. Measurements should be taken more carefully. Third "floor" is above the previous one just for a space needed to install a PCI video-card: about 12cm (5"). This is enough to place a fan over the Zalman radiator so that air flow would feel itself free and it won’t produce too much noise. As you have already noticed bottom tacks end at this level. It made so for CD-ROM to be able to pull out it’s tray. The main mistake is hidden exactly between the second and the third levels. While projecting every exact level based on common sense and then after assembling them altogether we find out that our common sense did let us down. General things don’t follow the exact ones, so after assembling the project had some defects, which were not noticeable before we had all parts in our hands. For example, wires from PSU from the first level pass to the second near one side of mobo, and it passes to the third level on other side. So wires do not make too straight way to HDD and CD-ROM and their length is hardly enough. It is not a big problem btw, but it is unpleasant. After installing plexi on the top level it is right time to insert our book-stand inside the bin. For fix the bin there’re 4 holes in it’s bottom which hold our 4 tacks with screw-nuts that work as 4 stands now. Our bin looks awesome after assembling. Yes, we don’t have drives, rheobus, CCFL’s and some wires, but main idea is clear. We have to cut holes in the grid of the bin for access to devices, sockets and buttons. As a whole we can confidently say that 50% of the work is done.

Yep, first we'vw bought the hardware. After opening 2 IKEAs in Moscow and some more in Russia Invar went strait to the position "Richest man in the world"
Stage 3. Managing parts. In previous two parts of the worklog we described only 50% of our laboratory experiments – design development and carcass creation for the project. The other 50% is finishing parts to the final stage. The first thing we need to do is provide all the devices with connection with outer world, other words – cut windows in the bin for external devices connectors on mobo and for access to DVD-ROM and rheo-bus. Cutting windows in itself doesn’t make any problems – cutting pliers do their work fast and accurately. But here comes much bigger problem: what should we do with edges of these cuttings? It is very sharp and looks like barbed wire. The first idea that came across our mind was to put on molding on edges, but the rubber one looks to put it mildly not very inspirational. If we take the metallic molding it is hard to work with. Anyway using molding means we will have a meeting-point in contour that doesn’t look pretty. The solution was found – we made sandwich out of soft plastic. It is 1mm (1/25”) thick and red colored. Such kind of design is often used by beginners to hide defects of cuttings, but they usually use mirror plexi. Sandwich is two equal parts placed on opposite sides of the bin wall and then tightened with screw-bolts. This completely solves the “barbed wire” problem and blends with the whole design. The last thing we need to work on is the top cover of our bin. By this moment it is simply transparent so it is not pretty original. Besides we can see the HDD thru the cover with its annoying sticker. According to our plan RYC will be placed on the floor near desktop where recycle bins usually are. So the top will be seen mostly. In this situation the top cover is the best place for putting logo on that will partly hide HDD in its turn. The “Recycle” logo made of the same red plastic will be sticked to the lid with double-sided scotch tape. I associate (for some reason) word “Recycle” with storing and recycling of nuclear garbage. In many Hollywood movies that have nuclear fuel in its plot it is represented as a spherical or cylindrical capsule. Removing of which is always accompanied with vapor discharge and sounds of some kind of hydraulic system. Interior of our RYC looks just like such kind of capsule made of plexi. For finishing work it is needed to attach handles that will ease carrying and give possibility to extract “nuclear fuel” from the bin. The order of the day is the most unpleasant thing – soldering wires for LEDs, buttons and VFD and wrapping it to the sleeves. Project “Recycle your computer” is 90% completed. The only thing left is tuning and then starting up the system.
