From AMD: It doesnt mean you wont be able to buy 754 chips for a while yet from retailers though id imagine, but DDR2 AMDs should be out 2006 \o/.
We all knew from square one that socket 754 was only temporary; why should we care so much that it is finally being made fully obsolete as a gaming platform (Or if Im interpreting this right, as a "budget" platform)?
AFAIK AMD will be introducing Semprons on Socket 939 at some point, I do not know firm dates for this though. Socket 754 will coexist until that comes happens - I think the fact that there has been no motherboard manufacturer that has designed a Socket 754 motherboard based around a PCI-Express chipset should spell the end of Socket 754 within 18-24 months.
there are no 32-bit 754's they are all 64-bit enabled, and amd has no reason to keep putting money into a 32-bit only chip as more and more ppl move to 64-bit with the release of xp-64 in the comming months
Both AMD and Intel keep on playing the socket/slot game. AMD has stayed with socket A for a LONG time and 754/939 are relatively recent. Intel, IMO, has been far worse at the socket game with their chips.
I have a 754 amd64 2800+ and it's working for me, only problem is no dual channel ram But I have a job interview in a sec, if they hire me I'll be getting a s939 and an a64 for that. Then my 2x512 will come alive!
For such a short time and all eh? Ah well, for not too much more, you can have a good nForce3 Ultra (nForce4 for not too much more) mother board and a Winchester core.
as i understood it, the sempron 32-bit S754 processors were really 64-bit ones that couldnt hack it at 64-bit and so were reduced down to 32-bit :S anyone want to agree or correct me on this?
After a little researching from the get go, I'd say I'll problably agree with you there. Still looking further on this though to know the full story on it myself. http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20040728/sempron-01.html
