News Wargaming buys Total Annihilation and Master of Orion from Atari

Atari has sold off several of its IPs at auction with Wargaming, Rebellion and Stardock all picking up franchises.

Isn't Planetary Annihilation the true Total Annihilation sequel anyway?

 

No, it's the spiritual sequel. Wargaming have come in too late on the TA franchise now. PA has reigned in the "sequel" title, even if it is in an unofficial capacity.

 

I just want them to do a MOO2 HD version and that's it. Similar to what relic are proposing to do with HomeWorld.

The problem is that you fundamentally can't make TA work in the same way that something like World of Tanks works. A decent RTS requires a longish duration for each mission, genuine strategic consideration, and an understanding of - ideally - a complicated tech tree and the implications of it. If it doesn't have that, it isn't really an RTS (and it certainly isn't TA, or at least the best of what TA could be). If it does have that, it won't appeal to the twitching, thumb-fumbling twelve year olds who spend the most money on this stuff.

But yes. TA already has a sequel, to all intents and purposes. What they do to it now will be a desecration of a corpse, but the thing itself died years ago, and was replaced by another.
