    The maximum penalty is £500k?

    That doesn't seem to me that privacy issues are taken that seriously.

    Not even a slap on the wrist, that's more like a vague waft at the ankle.

    That works out at just over three pence per customer.

    Maybe I'm overly cynical, but I can't help wondering if that's why so many data breaches were taking place - it was just cheaper and easier to pay any potential fines than it was to bother implementing a proper level of security.

    Hopefully the new percentage of turnover fines will concentrate minds a little more...
