Epic no doubt, but to my mind you'd need to be using the chip a lot to do something that made you a substantial amount of money to justify the set-up cost.

:( lack of x399 support sucks big ones.

Server space has backwards compatibility, so it must be possible.

TRX40 does look like a useful platform to cope with the next few years, loads of lanes and bandwidth but then I already have that.....I was hoping for an x3950 equiv on x399.

Quite excited by the prospect of the 3000G. Could redefine just how little you have to pay for a reasonably capable budget current gen system.

Pricing has been announced as $1,399 and $1,999 respectively (UK pricing TBC) – both notably higher than the upcoming Intel HEDT flagship, the 18c/36t Core i9-10980XE, which is slated for $979.

AMD charging more for a CPU than Intel.

    /faints.

The Cascade lake price cuts haven't as far as i've seen... casdaded... to the Xeon-W lineup which is, arguably, what AMD are pitching Threadripper against.

Intel's HEDT wares are more or less covered by regular Ryzen.

Hopefully. I'd love it to be an easily available 50 quid no brainer for basic systems. Being able to overclock and drop in a discrete GPU at a later date would be the cherry on top.

The £2700 28 core Xeon is the competition for the 32 core Ripper, not the puny 18 core HEDT.

    Ah I see.

Shame they need a new board. My buddy won't be best pleased.

The Cascade Lake-based, server socket [skt3467] using, 28C Xeon-W 3275, like what is [almost certainly] in the range-topping Mac Pro has an RRP of $4449 iirc...

Probably best to hold off anyway... what with the knowledge that AMD could pull the trigger any day and go beyond 32 cores...

How come the most expensive one has less cache? The 3960 has more than the 3970.

    Typo... *prods @Dogbert666*

    the 3960X has 128MB L3 + 12MB L2 [the 140MB total quoted in the bumf], the 3970 has 128 + 16 [144 total]

    Sauce and saucier

Well, the price of the 3970X means that I am much, much more interested in the Cascade Lake X 18-core part than I was. I was already interested due to AVX-512 (if/when AMD add that, I'll be very happy) but what are likely to be very expensive boards coupled with a two-grand CPU...
