Hello all, and a Merry Crimbo to you all !

I git my 11 year old son an Acer Aspire One (Linux 8gig version) for xmas and he likes to play PuzzlePirates online. Basically it uses Java and you can either play it via a browser or by downloading the binary. Got the binary downloaded and installed but it hangs when trying to log in - no idea why!

Also the browser version doesn't work either - when you click start, it opens another window which nothing actually appears in - and yes, I've turned off blocking pop ups - any Linux guru's able to help an 11 year old at Xmas!

    Ta!

What Distro of linux is it?

hmm... when it hangs on login, is that the Graphical based login or a CLI one? If it is grpahical, try Ctrl-Alt-F6, this will take you to the CLI login and the after logging in try 'telinit 3" This will change the runlevel from 4 to 3 and shut down the Xserver (Your GUI) then you can try removing Java from the CLI and finding a JAVA package for your Distro.

Thanks for the reply, but you should treat me as a Linux noob. I used to use Unix at Uni way back in the mid-late 90's but frankly other than a few remembered command line bits I can't remember much!

It looks like since I followed the below he can get logged in via the browser, but didn't look like the Java version increased....

Ugh, what a nasty way to install Java. (I run slackware so everything is build your own packages)

Did you remove the old "IcedTea"?
