I have it all picked out:
Apple Certified Refurbished MacBook Pro for $1699
2.0ghz Core Duo
512mb ram (will bring this up to 2gb from NewEgg.com)
80gb 5400 rpm HD (Just fine for now, but maybe a 120gb down the road and turn this into an external drive)

But I've been hearing SERIOUS rumors of core 2 duo coming out around labor day weekend (next weekend for those of you across the pond) -

If true, it would at the least drop the price of everything else and possibly allow me to get my refurb for less - and maybe it would allow me to jump up to the 2.16ghz for the same money - this is killing me!!!!!

(MBP will be my birthday present from myself with a little help from the parents. Birthday is 8/29)

 

well Apple always shows their new products on a tuesday unless there is a keynote or something, but it wouldnt suprise me if they did which would be sweet I have thought about selling my 15" mbp for a macbook with merom

 

i wouldn't expect the release of a new wave of macbooks/macbook pros for another month beyond the relase of the core2duos.

nor would I expect that release to effect the pricing of refurbished items

 

I'd just buy it now tbh, I don't think core 2 duo will be hitting the mac market very soon.

 

The performance difference between core duo and core duo 2 is very small anyway

Huh? Not from what I've heard... sometimes as much as 50% faster on the C2D Conroe chips than on the C1D of the same clock speed.

Anyways, I saw a little snipped at thinksecret about a Mac Mini update... if that comes around labor day with really any ol' dual core chip in the $599 model, I'm all over it (screw my newfound student's budget). I'd rather be able to bring my MBP to class instead of their iffy Lenovo thing anyways, rather than have it locked to my desk.

[/tangent] Enjoy it DTE, it's a great notebook. I did the same thing - 2GB from Newegg. Excellent choice, especially if you ever need to use something like Parallels.

 

parallels runs great even using just 1GB

though I'm normally never using windows... it's simply there for amusement

 

After I upgrade the ram, anybody want to buy a 512mb stick of Apple DDR2 SODIMM?

Not when you've got a 24" widescreen completely full of other apps and the main 15" doing parallels fullscreen. In any case, Windows needs at least a gig to run now, which you can't easily do when OS X wants a bit for itself.

That or I'm just a ram whore.

DTE - possibly. If I get a Mini, I might want it (as I've got a spare 512mb myself, and would want to give it a gig at least), but don't hold it for me if someone else is interested.

Not the reviews I've seen its 1-2% and 2-3degrees in difference, are you sure your not confusing the desktop chips thats where the big differences are.

i was going to wait and get my mb 2.o ghz but i decided to get it and iif the core2 duo comes around i can return my macbook in 2 weeks i think

 

I bought a refurb - I'm not sure if apple will allow me to return it...

still same processors/memory etc for same prices

 

they are shipping new ones labeled with the old specs. They will do this until they are out of stock of the old ones.

They got rid of the solo.
