There are reports all over the net of the "flaky MacBooks".

In fact all of them trace back to one single blog post: http://marklem.com/mlem/?p=8

That's one display-model MacBook in one Apple Store.

I'll happily retract this statement if any more reports of flaky paint come in (not that it matters to me, I'm getting a white one) but for now, couldn't this just be an isolated manufacturing defect?

Don't understand how this has happened. Surely they'd run quality tests on the units which would reveal that the paint flakes off?!

It's kinda like the white DS Lite system, which stains really easily (even if you're hands are stupidly clean) - you'd think Nintendo would've come across this problem during testing?

Do companies no longer give a monkeys about their consumers?

Meh I was already put off by the increased price tag just for a different colour. I'll go for the £749 if I get one.

P...p...paint? For that much extra money I'd want a high-durability PVD finish, or do the whole thing in anodised aluminium... hell, charge even more & do an anodized Ti edition, even niobium for those not so fussed about weight... ;) hah.

Personally, I'm still content using a regular ol' desktop, and have no real interest in Apple... beyond that this offends the designer in me.

    -edit-
(you can't anodise titanium black, I was intending other colours... thought I'd clarify before I got jumped on!)

Cheaper to mass produce maybe? From what I know, white iBooks (Macbooks) are painted from the inside, so maybe black Macbooks are just white Macbooks with a coating of black on them.

Should we be blaming Apple, or Asus?

Paint? Since when does Apple use PAINT? The only lappy I can think of that uses paint that Apple made in recent times was the TiBook, and that wasn't a flakey paint job, by any means, oh no.

For shame Apple! You guys should know better than to release a product with bad finish, with your products all "chic" and that... sheesh.

EDIT: Also, Apple went from painted titanium skin to anodized aluminium for the reason that paint scratches, so as to why they are using paint again; maybe I was wrong in the thought Apple learned their lesson.

That was the first iBooks, yes. They were clear plastic with white paint on the inside. Made for a interesting dreamlike finish.

The last few iBooks though were just opaque white Lexan polished to a gleam. Cheaper to make.
