News BT unveils Smart Hub ADSL/VDSL router

BT still not unveiled fiber in my close-to-London area. This month I will celebrate 9th anniversary of this fact

 

I've already got a Hub 5, and also got a homeplug device which gives me 2 ports and a wi-fi connection downstairs. Why on earth would I buy a new router with bigger range, allowing more hackers from outside attempting to steal my bandwith? No thanks.

 

you do know those people with bt broadband can legally log into your broadband don't you via wifi? its part of the contract you aigned

 

Very easily disabled at any time and NOT compulsory.

 

And it'll still be defeated by Edwardian brickwork no doubt, meaning it still won't work in my Grandparents house... or several others I frequent...

 

Yep, default option is on and very simple to turn off.

 

If you disable it you loose the ability to use other peoples wifi for free in return, but of course that is easily defeated by leaving it switched on and using a 3rd party router.

 

Our HB 5 works just fine ....if it ain't broke, why fix it?

 

Why is this such a problem anyway? I don't use more then a tiny fraction of my infinity connection 99% of the time, but I do like it that I can find wi-fi hotspots everywhere, or when we were having wiring done in the house I could just use the neighbours BT connection to check up on the news. A little bit of sharing makes a better world for everyone.

 

I agree with this. Of it weren't for the security concerns I would be happy to leave my WiFi open. As it is, only the laptop and my phone use it, the important stuff is on the wired gigabit network.

 

Don't touch my internet. That is my standpoint.

 

I've never felt the need to use someone else's WiFi, my PC is a bit unwieldy for carrying about, I don't have a smartphone and very rarely use my tablet, just when I am going to be waiting in the Quack's surgery and they have free WiFi for all. So for me it is a case of I couldn't care less if I lose the ability to use someone else's WiFi.
