I wanted to design a circuit either by using a microcontroller or a 555 timer... The circuit would control a servo motor that would open and close a lightweight aluminum door panel to hide and conceal a special project box.

I wanted to trigger the motor by using some kind of sensor, most likely a high intensity touch sensor or proximity.

Are there any suggestions on where I can go to further develop my concept into a possible mod, or is there anyone willing to help out on this... macroman? tis a good project for ya!

The circuits on that PDF are exactly what I would have given you.

Other than that a Basic Stamp or other microcontoller makes it insainly easy.

sorry to jumpin and thread hijack - would it be possible to move a servo shaft externally (mechanically) ie have a bar attached to the output shaft which would be freely movable by hand, and also movable via the servo mechanism when a different bar position was wanted

sorry for the crap explination (this is for a third year project - servos will be mounted on the rings of a gyroscope gimble - want the rings to move freely most of the time - but would aslo like to force the rings in a direction when need be)

    cheers

Nope, I don't think you can.

Servos have VERY high gearing, which gives them so much torque from their tiny litle motors, so it's like pushing a car that's in 1st gear with the engine off.

Ditto you will only break the servo.
