So the other week I upgraded my PC, I bought the Asus Strix x870-f, the AMD Ryzen 9 9950x, 2x32gb DDR5 6400 CL32 RAM, a Be Quiet Pure Loop 2 360mm AIO and a 1000w PSU. I fitted it all into my Meshify 2 XL and re-used the M.2 drives I was already using. I also bought a Asus Tuf Gaming RTX4080 Super OC. All working great so no problems and over the old components I replaced, the performance difference is massive. With the PC, I use productivity software, such as Lightroom, Photoshop and also use it for general purposes. I do use it for gaming and flight simming more though. The gaming aspect has led me to a bit of confusion though. The 9950x is dual CCD, but from what I can gather, differs from the X3D chips as it doesn't have the increased cache size? So that leads me on to the confusion....should I enable CPPC in the BIOS for this chip? It says that it can offer increased performance in some games, worse in others. Gaming wise, it's Battlefield, simming wise it's MSFS 2020 and I've pre-ordered MSFS 2024, along with DCS. Would CPPC enabled offer any increased performance in these titles? Or would I be better just leaving it disabled? Reviews seem mixed on this CPU and I'm new to the Zen 5 chips so a bit clueless really.
I think it has something to do with selecting the fastest cores for boosting/ preferred cores? I think it is enabled on my machine as HW INFO has asterisk next to cores 0&2 on mine which are the ones that seem to boost higher. I could be totally wrong though.
it may also be what control core parking, where it puts one ccd to sleep in certain scenarios [mostly gaming]... the 2-ccd zen 4 x3d parts did it where it parked the non v-cache die, but iirc the non-x3d 2-ccd zen5 parts do it too
No two games perform alike, so technically there is no universal answer and its a case of testing it game by game. However, since the two CCDs of the 9950x are identical it won't make much of a difference, talking low single digit %, so I'd leave it off to avoid negative impact in productivity software.
