I have a screen with the usual yellow video out, i can easily change to s-video with a cable But i was wonderin whether converting to vga would be better, or possible? This is for a car pc, so quality would be needed!! The screen is 6.5" by the way, PIONEER
if you mean it has composite video IN not out then you can get converters to go from vga to composite but picture will still be crappy. your better off to get a motherboard w/ an s-video or composite out. or get a better screen if you can afford it.
How crappy is crappy? As dvds and video should be ok? Also this is from an in car tv, pioneer i think so was not cheap!! And these display sat nav/gps, so quality cant be that bad can it? Or is car gps different to displayin normal text?
The problem isn't the quality of the display, it's the resolution. You're running essentially an NTSC monitor, 525 lines of resolution. On top of that, you've got interlacing, so you're looking at a fairly low resolution at any given 60th of a second. Meanwhile, the computer at it's lowest will usually output 640x480 (VGA). While this is greater than a TV, it's not easy to downscale. You can't logically half it (320x240) and get 525 lines, so what you have to do is selective drop pixels (quick and easy) or resample and downscale using some serious algorithms. Either way (depending on the quality of your converter), your picture is gonna be smudgy for text. Videos meanwhile, I doubt you will be able to notice the difference. There are a few graphics cards that will actually support NTSC out, but most will set the resolution to 640x480 do the downscaling (like a converter box) and send it out as NTSC (aka, smudginess). So, you're pretty much stuck unless you can find some special cards. Sorry
