Hi Guys, There's been a few threads here around whether DX11 is worth it, particularly since cards like the 4890 are available cheap and actually offer excellent frame rates. I thought I would start a thread where you can post and/or comment on game screenshots - as they relate to hardware. Below are some Metro 2033 screenshots ... highest settings, but I think the most interesting aspect is tessellation, where the geometric models are smoothed automatically. Here are the full-resolution BMPs if you prefer those. http://www.adops.eu/dev/dx11/1.bmp http://www.adops.eu/dev/dx11/2.bmp http://www.adops.eu/dev/dx11/3.bmp http://www.adops.eu/dev/dx11/4.bmp http://www.adops.eu/dev/dx11/5.bmp http://www.adops.eu/dev/dx11/6.bmp http://www.adops.eu/dev/dx11/7.bmp http://www.adops.eu/dev/dx11/8.bmp http://www.adops.eu/dev/dx11/9.bmp http://www.adops.eu/dev/dx11/10.bmp http://www.adops.eu/dev/dx11/11.bmp http://www.adops.eu/dev/dx11/12.bmp http://www.adops.eu/dev/dx11/13.bmp http://www.adops.eu/dev/dx11/14.bmp
It will always come down to a persons pov of ' worth it ' Unlimited budget - Yes Upgrading just for Dx11 - No I've got 5850's Xfire and DX 11, so i suppose i'm lucky. Could i live without it , well yes. I had the money and will always try and go for better graphics. Will someone with a 4890 that runs the game at the same playable speed miss DX11 ? , i doubt it. Untill all games support DX11 fully , then its not a neccessary requirement. Sadly the hardware will continue to push at a rate that software still can't keep pace with ; All games DX11, and backward comp. Full utilisation of cores - quad and hex.
I also think that it will take a year or so for dx11 to really come of age, but I do like where it is going.
Metro to be honest is not a very good example. i prefer Dirt 2 and hopefully upcoming Crysis 2, those with open world, great sunshine to showcase and best compare between real life. great screenshots though. what FPS are you getting? @mrdbristol, i was just in Clevedon this morning i currently live in Yatton with my parents.
Changes are too subtle to make the jump to dx11 worth it for me... what do i go to from sli gtx280 cards? Doesn't really look that much of a change from max without dx11. Maybe next year.
Here are similar DX10 shots with everything on high. I haven't done a good comparison myself yet - but yes, pretty subtle on the face of it. Frame rates jumped up in DX10 mode .. they were dropping around 25 fps in DX11. 25fps seems low considering in direct x 10 you would get 40-50+ Metro 2033 looks good but I didn't enjoy it all that much, 280 sli has no upgrade path since 5870 cf is around same speed. Problem is still price 5850 the min card you need for direct x 11 ( every setting is Ment to be maxed not at medium) is still £220 min vs the 4890 which win do the same fps give or take 3 without direct x 11 which is about £120 new £80 on fleabay Major price dif really
